Dining area colors

Does it matter if you match colors in your kitchen to colors in your dining area if they are next to each other? I have cherry cabinets with black granite countertops and want to recover my dining chairs with navy blue and put blue decor on the walls and table.

For me, there aren’t rules for this - only guidelines. What counts is the result. The color ’values’ you have are all strong so they should be compatible. But, we do want adjoining rooms to flow together not look like they belong in separate houses. Do you have any navy blue accents in the kitchen i.e. counter accessories, window treatments? Will the fabric to recover your chairs have any elements of black (countertop color) in them? How about framed art on walls - any black frames? Pictures of both rooms will get you lots of advice to pick & choose from & point out things you may not have thought of. At the end of the project, the important thing about the result is - Do you like it?!

Thank you! The one thing that stands out in the kitchen to me is the small red squares in the backsplash. I will add pictures

Here's what I have. My husband painted the walls white and said we could go from there and change whatever I wanted.

Thanks for the pics. I can’t tell from the two how open the connection between the two rooms is & that can make a difference to how connected the colors should be. I like the stainless sink & the outlet covers. I see red drapes in mirror - are those in DR or another room? I see a black framed art too! The red accents in kitchen BS stands out & I see the red wine glasses on cab tops. Do you have any other red in kitchen either on counter or rug on floor in front of sink or stove? Do you have bar / counter stools in kitchen? Wondering about seats. Your wood in dining set & sideboard is a good match to cabs. Have you looked at upholstery fabric yet? Not sure about introducing a 3rd color but a shade of navy that’s almost black - very dark with some red in it might work. I’m making assumption that you’d choose a printed fabric over solid but maybe not. If not, do consider the stain challenge from sloppy diners that’s harder to disguise in a solid color fabric.

Those are pictures I had from a couple years ago. I will send updated pictures when I'm back at home but thank you so much for everything you've said thus far.

I like your neutral paint color and would not introduce another color. I would remove the greenery and anything else on top of the cabinets. My preference is NO BOOZE on display. Can it be put in the cabinet? It should not be part of the decor.

Here are updated pictures from today. It's a work in progress for sure. Excuse the mess. I've been slowly putting things back together after the painters left. I plan on getting rid of the small wine cabinet. I need to decide what to do with the window. Thanks for your advice!

Oh and I'm changing out the color of the lights under the cabinets

Well - that’s quite a different view of space than the first 2 pics 😁 Will you show one more? A better view of what looks like a bar with clear lights hanging over it to right of sink. And, I see you now have an upper top cabinet on the china cupboard in dining area. Do you have window treatments for the dining window or are you planning for some? Do you have art to hang on wall in dining area? Do you have an area rug for dining area or are you interested in having one? What is that small but tall cabinet in dining area between window & doorway? What color are you changing under cabinet lights to?

ETA -sorry to bombard you with questions but the pics of your space really change up the things to consider. To get useful input it’s important to know what your goal or vision is.

Give me a little more time to finish cleaning up and have counters cleared. I do not have window treatments yet. I have a totally new cupboard. I had a mirror on the empty wall by the table. No area rug. I would get one if it helped. The small cabinet is a wine cabinet. I thought I would get rid of it but 🤷🏻‍♀️. The lights looked yellow but my husband says it's because of the backsplash. Not sure what to do with that. The table has one of two inserts in it and can be made smaller. The bar separates my kitchen and family room. I will get more pictures and post. Probably not tonight, it's almost midnight here and I've been going all day 🫠

I have no idea what to do and I like so many different things. I find it difficult to figure out what goes and what doesn't

@ybreeze11 Sometimes when trying to figure out what one likes it’s easier to first figure out what one doesn’t like to narrow the focus. Your undercabinet lights might have a yellow cast to them if they’re a warm tone. Don’’t know what kind of lights you have in kitchen but daylight color is better to show the real true color of things. Take out a bulb / light in the overhead lights & under cabinet lights & go to lighting store or local big box store to see the different kinds. This will not be a fast trip - plan to spend a good amount of time figuring out the lighting! It’s a very important step for kitchen lighting so it’ll be worth the effort.

ETA your lighting under the cabinets does look very yellow - I’m sure it’s the color of the lights not the back splash. bright white 3500k would be much better. Find out if the light can be changed.

What it on the other side of the counter with clear lights hanging over it? It is a den area?

It's a small family room. It has to be put back together as well

As your dining room and kitchen are completely open to one another, my preference (which may not be yours) is for the dining room colors to be complementary to the kitchen’s bold yellow/red backsplash and cabinet color.

If you prefer to use blue (rather than yellow and/or red) in the dining room, consider a dining room rug that ties together all the colors. The blue in the rug would be the shade of blue to use in the dining room.

A quick search shows these multi-colored rugs, below. This isn’t the right rug necessarily but I wanted to show you an example if what I meant:

    Thank you!

@k8cd here's a picture of the bar and beyond. It's pulled apart too.

    Thanks!
Is that your only family/sitting/living room? If so, would you consider switching them- to have the larger family room and smaller dining room? That is what would work for my family (but you should do what works for yours).

Agree with Design Fan about using the colors from the kitchen in the dining room since they are open to each other. But I do think you can bring blue in. I think the same palate should be used in the family room too.

Is the backsplash yellow? Or brown? It looks two different colors depending on the picture.

We have a front room at the entrance of the house that nobody uses. The back splash is more brown I say. Here's a picture with natural light from the window on it.

@ybreeze11 Thanks for pic of the other side of space. I’m seeing a trend in your style! Your dining chair backs are tropical palm leaves, your bar stool backs look woven rattan & your Houzz user name - a play on breezy - as in tropical breezes? 😊 Question about the light over dining table - first pic shows a black iron chandelier, second one shows a crystal one. Which is there? Suggestion for dining arrangement - move the wine cabinet to the wall opposite the china cabinet - maybe center on wall between corner & door. Where it is now is too crowded - can’t tell if that’s a door or window to left of wine cab in picture but too crowded either way. If you don’t like that, move the china cabinet to opposite wall. It looks like it’ll fit but might be tight with all the extension leaves in table & trying to keep table centered under chandlier. I agree with suggestion for dining rug especially if you’re wanting a more formal space as the crystal light makes it seem. You may need a rug pad bc of the tile floor. I’d definitely want a rug with black border to tie into countertops & reds in pattern to tie into backsplash. Blue could be in pattern too. What about window treatments? I’d keep any drapes or blinds neutral or match wall color. A priority is getting the color of the undercabinet lights changed. You will be amazed at how much difference that will make in the appearance of BS.

The lighting over the dining table is crystal and was my mother in laws. she left it to me because I've always loved it. I'm all for whatever looks good and not thrown together like what I've had/have. Our house layout is odd, but it's what I have.

Does your backsplash look as yellow in person when the undercabinet lighting is on as it does in one of your photos? If yes, consider changing the bulbs.

It doesn't look yellow in person.

Is the front room that nobody uses behind the stove wall?

If it is close to the kitchen, would you consider making it a formal dining room?

Move the crystal chandelier and china cabinet (maybe wine cabinet too depending on space) to that room. And decorate with any colors you wanted.

And then have a more casual eating area in this room?

It's right at the front door of our house.

I could have my husband rip out the backsplash lol. It's the problem if you ask me

I don’t think the BS is a problem - it looks like a it’s complementary to the floor. It’s the photo that distorts the color so much. In the close up the true tones show. Some red accent pieces on counter & a table center piece with some red in it would be nice. Your initial question was about adding navy blue to dining area. I think the consensus from responses was maybe but only in smaller touches not as a main color such as for drapes. I do think a rug under the table with red / black / navy on a cream background would be a nice add to DR especially with your chandelier. I like that the counter pendants are clear glass— a nice complement to chandelier.

Thank you! I found this picture and think a rug would be a great way to incorporate a little bit of blue with red. Design fan posted similar if not maybe the same.

Yes! I agree with Design Fan’s suggestion too. Looking at the colors of first rug she shows reminds me that yellow / gold is a great color with red. It also works very well with black. Maybe you could use a photo of your dining room & a visualizer / see it in your room tool to try out rugs like that first one with the gold /red /navy on cream in it. Looks like you’ll need a pretty good sized rug so maybe if you find one online instead of locally, you could order a smaller size first to check the colors. That smaller sized sample could be used in front of kitchen sink etc - or, it’s much easier to return if you don’t like it.. Don’t forget a rug pad
