I still like this house with all its weird things.I think the weird things are what makes this house cool and I lkke the niches in that space . I am not sure what you are describing about the actual FP . Maybe try to take some pics to show exactly what you are talking about.

A piece of pottery perhaps. Especially with the lite area .

If this was my home, I would add a few wood beams and a wood mantle to warm up the space. But it would change the vibe that you may not want. Maybe as others said, some pretty pottery on the fireplace wall that would bring subtle color to the room. I have the same fireplace doors you have. I would like to change mine to something less old fashion.

Spray paint the gold parts of the fireplace black. Add pottery in the niches. Good luck!

Forgot to add I love the Art Deco feel to the fireplace. Unique and something most homeowners don’t have.

I love the fireplace as is, the brass gives it interest and the niches are the perfect vehicle to display some 3D art that You love. All that white is just begging for some art. Start visiting galleries and art shows to see what speaks to you. Or pick up interesting pieces on your travels that bring back pleasant memories of places you’ve been. I definitely would not tile the fireplace.

Paint screen as suggested. What is the built in on the right wall? It appears to be carpeted and I find that more disconcering than the fireplace. Remove carpet, finish with some lovely wood and add deep cushions if it is inteded for additional seating. The niches and lighting beg for some colorful Murano-type glass bowls or vases to add color and reflect light.

Make sure to use fire-safe paint in that brass. Once the fireplace is all black, the pottery choices for the niches will make a fabulous statement.

Is it in the plan to remove the carpeting and extend the wood flooring? This is a unique room but the carpet works against it.

I agree with others on the niches, I love them.

Regarding the fireplace, you may be able to remove the brass trim pieces, sometimes they are just slipped on over black metal. If not, you can paint them black so they disappear. We then provide custom made decorative covers that snap on with magnets. Here are some examples:
