For me personally, I would ensure you have lots of counter space to eliminate the need for an island, then have a nice harvest dining table in the kitchen if that is your style. Anything too formal may not work. Regarding the living room, how many people do you need to seat on a regular basis? My living room seats six, but on the occasion that more seating is required, I bring in my dining room chairs. Most of my senior guests prefer the dining chairs as it is easier to get out of them. Make sure that you try out the furniture to ensure comfort. My girlfriend bought a beautiful sofa online and it was like sitting on a wood plank. The sofa was the last place guests sat down on!
