Fabric/bedding help

last year
last modified: last year

So you may recall my MBR bedding quest. The walls, floors, and upholstered bed are a given. I want "neutral," washable easy-care bedding, with an interesting pillow(s).

Was thinking of these two fabrics:

However I also ordered this sample. I now like it better, but don't know what it is and cannot figure it out from my sample orders or a reverse image search. Anyone know what this fabric is?

@gardener123 I've been sleeping on enVy pillows for years now. Much better for my neck. I also have the travel pillow.

  • last year

This throw as a stand in for the one in the image?

  • last year

Has anyone ever heard of this brand? These look like pillowcases that would give our pillows a finished look yet be simple enough to sleep on and throw in the wash. Can't decide between white and "natural."

    LOL, I ordered them too!

    The ones with natural trim

I also realized I didn't want any more blankets. what I really wanted was a duvet cover for my duvet, that I could fold at the foot of the bed. I ordered a pearl grey crinkle velvet duvet cover. In some light it is taupe-y --- we shall see.

Also surprised to measure and find that my bolster in Maine is 9"x53" --- trying to get this one made in that size too.

  • last year

I ordered them too ... in sage green (which were even more discounted). If I like them, I will also order in natural too.

I think a duvet+ cover is a great plan and your velvet selection sounds yummy!

Okay, now I want the pink ones. How do they close? Is there a zipper? envelope closure in the back?

  • last year

I am guessing it is more like an envelope, I have light blue cotton ones like that.

The reviews are very positive but one person noted a shipping delay and one person and odd smell that went away when washed.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a bolster using this fabric:

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/1370132427/katsura-pillow-in-cream-and-lavender?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_ps-a-home_and_living-home_decor-other&utm_custom1=k_CjwKCAiAkp6tBhB5EiwANTCx1OmNE_lZihXpGu8pbSohu5wc76xnnKnh5gfF4uK4RZ2bNf7HmblnkBoCqZYQAvD_BwE_k&utm_content=go_12567673668_122422056191_507253754128_pla-303663660129_c__1370132427_111885849&utm_custom2=12567673668&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAkp6tBhB5EiwANTCx1OmNE_lZihXpGu8pbSohu5wc76xnnKnh5gfF4uK4RZ2bNf7HmblnkBoCqZYQAvD_BwE

It will be 10"x52" , same size I have on a Q bed in Maine. I am hesitating to pull the trigger for one reason.

As you see from the OP, this is a neutral room to a level the Swiss could envy. You can't see it in the photo but the only other furniture is (wait for it) an off-white duck slipcovered chair and ottoman. I don't plan on adding any WT or floor covering. I did add one thing, over the bed. You may recall I once planned a gallery wall for here, but when I started working on it, it seemed wrong for the space.

I did however hang up one framed print, of a famous painting. I've always liked this painting since I saw it 30 years ago. The first time I went to the Louvre, this work, and not more famous pieces, spoke to me. I've since been to Paris several times and I always visit her.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grande_Odalisque

So, the question is .... with only two items in the room that have any colors, should they relate?Ordinarily I'd say art hopefully does not clash but really need not relate to decor. But in this case, all eyes are on her, and that Brobdingnagian Bolster. Should I find a fabric with some of the deep blues, and golds from the painting?

  • last year

Personally, I don't try to match art to items in the room-- but also dont want them to clash in color or the tone/vibe.

I am not sure the tone of the art and the fabric work together for me. They don't clash but there doesn't seem to be any connection. For me, that would bring some tension to the room.

That said, I have seen others pull together rooms beautifully where the art kind of stands on its own -- but they are generally more layered rooms with more going on.

yes, you are right --- the tone of the art does not "work" in the room, either. Then again museum walls are usually stark.

Maybe the pillow should be velvet or silk, or brocade, like something in the painting.

  • last year

Ive always loved your painting ... and i don't think it feels wrong for the room in my minds eye. I may even thinking it works with the bolster pillow too when i see them together in situ.

Have you mocked it up? What do YOU/DH think of them together? (I mean, it is not like *I* am going to spend time in your BR lol)

  • last year

I think they are fine together, but I think I could find something better.

  • last year

Agree with you about painting/fabric not tying together as well as they could.

  • last year

Yes, I think you can find something better. I agree they don't have to relate but I do like the colors to work together. It needn't be matchy-matchy, but I do think you can find something that works better with the art, which will be the star of the room : )

Thanks for posting the etsy pillows - I am requesting a sample of the Thibaut Gisselle in ivory!

Allison, that first one is so pretty. Arapaho, even though I have embraced the BOW (Big Orange Wall) I still can't do red, alas. The second one works very well.

I was away and just got back to the aprt late last night and went right to bed. This morning I noticed two things .... 1)my colors are different...nothing looks teal on my print! Also, 2)the actual size of the print, before matting and framing, is about the size of a pillow, so I am not sure how much detail one reads/notice.

I think I have to try to find some items for sale in a real store and experiment.

I worked on it a little bit yesterday afternoon. I like velvet because it is in, and though it is formal people now use it informally (so the simple modernity of my bed will be ok with it I think). I liked this pillow, but in another color:

Peacock pillows, but not sure how id use them or if I like them:

  • last year

    You have the best threads.

Following along and I like everything. I may even get those pillow case shams. What a great find

I love the peacocks above. I really love the first one, but I think in your room with your artwork that doesn't work. Maybe the 2nd or third ones?

I have to promote the Tiffany Peacock Scarf from the Met. It's 74 or 79 x 28.

It could lay it across the bottom of the bed.

It could be made into pillows.

You could wear it when you are lying on the bed.

  • last year

You could wear it when you are lying on the bed.

LOL, maybe as a turban, posing like the Odalisque who, art critics have opined, has five extra vertabrae, one arm longer than the other, and a derriere like a "sack of potatoes." And still looks a lot better than me!

It is one of the more tasteful renderings of a peacock.

  • last year

    My opinions only, as always

    • I dont dislike birds in the BR but the peacocks aren't working for me. Too bossy? Maybe bad memories when the neighboring farmers nasty peacocks hung out in my yard and harrassed/bothered my dogs? Not sure.. but my reaction tao the options was strong.
    • I love the fabric on the pillow Allison shared. It is modern enough to work with the existing furnishings but still transitional enough to work beautifully with the art. I love the colors.
    • Always love velvet

I am glad you mentioned the colors -- you have shared photos that included the Odalisque in the past and I didnt remember it as dark or with the prominent teal. At least I am not crazy ;)

  • last year

Yeah, this is "my" GO. Hung incorrectly but opportunistically on the hook that was there!

  • last year

Love your velvet lumbar pillow w/ fringe even better than the bolster because of the softness iin both fabric and shape. Color is perfect!

  • last year

I started to looking for velvet, but it's easy enough to find. Thought the one I linked had a nice modern twist and was simple, but not plain. Doing peacock pillows/throw would start a theme.

Got my Dusk pillowcases! I unexpectedly bought 4 extra. ( I wanted 4 cases, so I ordered 4 but the price was for a pair and I ended up with 8.) DD is going to take 4 off my hands. I bought the pink because my St. Franks cover is pink. They're washed and on and I love them. Thanks so much @mtnrdredux_gw

@barncatz....Do the pillowcases open in the back like a sham...or on the side? Did they shrink at all? Do they need ironed?

  • last year

Ohh,they look nice! I recd mine but have not tried them. I am so frustrated with this room!

  • last year
    last modified: last year

@nicole__, they open in the back but on one end, not in the middle. There's a little flap you tuck into the back fabric at one end. They did not shrink and I didn't notice any smell before I washed them. I washed them on cold and dried them for 15 on low. They were pretty dry and not too wrinkly because I grabbed them. I ran a cool iron over them because: new pillowcases. I like the fabric. I was afraid for the ridiculous price - even more so now that I realize it was for 2 pillows - that they would be super flimsy but they seem fine.

Bummer, mtn. What's not coming together?

  • last year
    last modified: last year

The colors on *my* print of the Grande Odalisque (right side below) are very different than the colors I was assuming from a screen grab (left side). So all the work I (we!) did to choose pillows was for naught.

I was at West Elm and thought these pillows and throw would work with *My* GO:

In the room, the pillows looked small and dark and the throw was meh.

I am very tired of looking at her now.

  • last year

mtn....YOU found a deal on those pillow cases! I purchased them in "king" with a "king" duvet to match, sage. Then two white bathroom rugs. I also missed that they were a pair. My husband laughed....they shipped Monday. I LOVE LOVE LOVE decorating with white...then layering colors & prints. I'll be in heaven when they arrive. THANK YOU!

Mtn...you solved MY decorating dilema. That's a LOT of pressure to create a work-of-art out of the bed....you've done it before. It's your forte. I'm stepping back now....

I still haven't opened mine, I am glad people like them and hope they work out for everyone!

I love pillow cases that look as nice as shams!

  • last year

Mine are out for delivery ... and I also didn't note that they were sets of two. I ordered 4 sets so I will have plenty of backups! For $8 and change, I am happy to store some extras in case I need them.

I wouldn't mind the natural trim either (and was there an all white?)

  • last year

I blame the seller, because it seems most of us didn't realize they were sets of two. I just tried mine (natural) and I love them. Nice little touch.

In other news, I ordered the original Thibaut Katsura bolster cover. Have a few coverlets/duvet covers on order.

  • last year

Caving to the influencers here, I want to order some pillow cases but need to clarify. It says “pair” - are you receiving something unexpected?

  • last year

    No, maybe it was us.

I will say one thing. The material is thinnish, like an ordinary pillowcase. That was what I wanted but often people think of heavier material when they think of a sham.

  • last year

Any updates, would love to see the bolster!

Very happy with the Dusk, will probably order more.

As far as the rest, I decided to go with this fabric:

Then starts my tale of woe. I wanted a very generous, long bolster (9x52") like I have in a guest room. Jan. 23 I ordered the cover custom made on Etsy, forwarding a link to the insert I bought. It arrived and was way too small. I could wrestle it on but it looked like it had cellulite. The maker argued with me. She had me send the cover *and* bolster back to her, She proceeded to argue with me again. I was not backing down; I know what it should look like. Then she sent back my insert and gave me a refund. That saga ended at the end of March - five weeks lost.

I found a second person on Etsy. I ordered a custom bolster from them March 21. I once again linked to the insert, shared pictures, and we discussed the optimal size. It arrived yesterday. It is 6" to short. They gave me a full refund just now.

The world does not seem to want me to have a 52" long bolster.

I am so tired of waiting. I ordered a new, smaller insert from Amazon today. If arrives tomorrow. If it fits I am done with it.

    Sorry you asked?😬

  • last year

Oh gosh, such a bummer. I can understand the diameter being an issue, but the length is a simple measurement. Thank goodness you had enough fabric. 6" is only 3" on each side, so hopefully you will still love it.

  • last year

The Esty fabricators supply their own fabric, so not an issue. Now I am tapping my toe waiting for Amazon!

  • last year

What is the width of the fabric?

And are you using it vertically or railroaded on the bolster?

This may be contributing to the width issues.

  • last year
    last modified: last year

If this is Thibaut Katsura it is 54" wide and the pattern goes Up the roll so it would have to go Around the bolster. You aren't going to get a 56" bolster with the fabric oriented the right way out of a single width of fabric, there would be a seam running up each side,

The very widest you will get seamless is 52" with a one inch seam

In other words, if you were using a fabric that went across the width instead of up the roll, since the pattern would then be vertical on something lying down like a bolster, you could have a seamless bolster almost 100 yards long. Since your pattern goes up the roll and you want it to be the correct way on the bolster, without seams you are going to end up with a 52" bolster. If you want 56" you are going to have a 2" strip of fabric up each end of the bolster. That's fine, they do it all the time, but it's a lot more fabric and fabrication.

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked palimpsest
  • last year

    You're good, Pal.

  • last year
    last modified: last year

Yes, Thibaut Katsura. This fabric is offered in custom pillows from at least two Etsy vendors. I didn't buy any fabric, so I kind of thought feasability was up to them. But your point is very helpful and underscores the wisdom of my order for the 48" one.

  • last year

They should be able to do up to 52" but it might be hard to sew in a tight circle with a relatively small seam allowance because you have to cut notches in the allowance to avoid bunching of fabric, I think.

But somehow I was reading your 52" as 54 or 56" I don't know why

  • last year

Mtn, local dry cleaners have tailors. I'm wondering if you can find a local tailor,

This doesn't seem like it should be this hard.

  • last year

I know, really. The people fabricating my DR slipcovers, windowseat and pillows could help, but I would have to find that particular fabric.

I do think a bolster is a lot trickier than a rectilinear pillow, but still, We will see how the bolster fits.
