How climbing hydrangeas grow

I have a large mound of climbing hydrangea whose branches have worked over to the foot of a locust tree about ten feet away. I would like to train it to climb the locust. The hydrangea has lightly rooted itself in the ground. My question is will it help the hydrangea to climb higher and faster if I sever it from the mother?

Depends on how "lightly" it has rooted. If it still gets a considerable amount of nutrients from the mother, you may want to wait a season or two. You can also help guide it upwards as it grows more and more.

I think as long as it is attached to the mother it will never root more than lightly. Or am I mistaken?

The macros I propagated by ground layering developed a good set of roots but I left them two years; I have not tried it with climbing hydrangeas.
