I don't live in Devon but it is not far away and we do have a lot of damp woodland with ferns growing in trees, mosses and lichens. A visitor from Guadeloupe said it reminded her of home ... apart from the temperature.

The very essence of a tulgy wood (and the exact opposite to my dry woodland. The flat, lowlands of east anglia would once have been characterised by wet woodland (alder 'carr'), and a waterworld of marsh and reed-beds (despite our climate being very different to the wet south-west of the UK). Extensive drainage and agriculture (and destruction of hedgerows and older methods of mixed farming (the 'Norfolk four-course system') has created conditions worryingly reminiscent of the 1930s dustbowl tragedy. Our degraded topsoil is literally blowing away.
