Ive been trying to get neon flamingo for a few years. I ordered from petal pushers, but she doesnt have it available again this year. so when i search for it, this blue barn daylilies comes up. im a lurker around here, though dont post much. i figred if anyone knows about daylily sellers, it would be this group. :)

Oakes Daylilies has Neon Flamingo. Link below. I've used them over the years and they have never failed to deliver a quality product without rust. You usually will receive more then a double fan for your money........Maryl

Thank you, Maryl. I did look at oakes too. Ive never ordered from them, but have heard good things. I just found a few more varieties that interest me at blue barn. Maybe I’ll order and report back.

MM has been a blooming machine for me. I have moved my plant to two different homes (in the middle of winter last time) and it never fails to put on a show. lots if daylilies dont open well when we have cool nights and mornings, but this one never fails.

MM is one of the earliest bloomers here. Yours certainly looks well grown. It is not a fast multiplier here. Bud count is okay. Blue Barn's catalog format is impressive. Several pictures are given of each cultivar, and while some pics are puffed-up phone pics, there are usually clump shots of each cultivar that allow one to gauge habit and performance.

Blue Barn Daylilies is owned by Holly Brunner, who is a Facebook friend of mine. I've never ordered from there, but I would think she's legit.

Holly Brunner is in our daylily club and has just recently started selling. I haven't ordered from her yet, but when she donates daylilies to the club, they are nice.

I just noticed this on the Blue Barn daylily website:

"Most 2024 orders will ship from late August - early October".

So shipping is late in the season if I'm reading that correctly. Sounds a bit like what Oakhill is doing. That doesn't suit my container culture at all, but for others it may not be a problem.............Maryl

Thanksfor all the replies! so it seems the general verdict is that shes legit, so would be worth trying an order. The late shipping, unfortunately, might be the deal breaker for me. August or perhaps september would probably be ok, but I wouldnt want to plant little plants here in october. we can sometimes be pretty cold by then. thanks again!

I have ordered from Oak Hill daylilies in central Illinois several times. Have been happy with what I received…good customer service from Bonnie.

Edit: Just looked up Oak Hill, shipping in September for them too. I’m wondering if last seasons weather had an impact.

Except for the far north, fall planting, I believe, is superior. But plants from the south (certainly Florida) have the challenge of acclimating in the fall. One reason for the change in shipping dates (by some southerners too, such as Georgia's Shady Rest Gardens) may be that spring is too hectic a time. Also, with climate change, there can be an onslaught of very warm weather in June and even May. I suspect that a nursery such as Blue Barn would ship a small order in the spring. Note too that the close of shipping is EARLY October. Northern gardens would probably receive plants much earlier. In Zone 5 Colorado, rust would probably not be an issue. Are you still Zone 5? There are new USDA maps out.

Mantis: Those "New" maps are a royal pain. Say what they will about our zone being warmer in winter now and moving us up to 7b, in reality the last 4 years have seen colder winters here with warm spring weather showing up later (our summers remain just as hot though). When plant vendors use this new government map to ship plants in the spring it puts those plants at risk. I've lost more then a few to this new map problem. I've heard others in these transitional zones complain about the same problem as well. The reality is that this is Oklahoma, so the climate will shift this way and that regardless of what some government agency says it will do, but it was closer to the mark before they changed it...........Sorry to vent but I'm right in the middle of ordering plants, so this sore spot is foremost in my mind as more and more vendors go "humanless" and rely strictly on computer input and data.........Maryl

I just wanted to update. I received my shipment from blue barn daylilies. The plants are lovely, large, with great roots. They were packaged really carefully and were still fine despite me being out of town and so sitting in the parcel locker at our mailbox for five days. Holly had excellent communication and I wouldn’t hesitate to order again.

I was a little bit worried based on the shenanigans with a certain rose vendor that many of us ordered from, but I’m so happy with this seller.

Well, I am confused. I just double checked Blue Barns website and this is the information they have posted:

" Shipping begins in mid-August and continues through the end of September. "

So when did you place your order and why did they arrive in spring, not after mid August? Very nice plants btw.......Maryl

Maryl - There must have been a very small window for Spring shipping because the message I get on the website is that Spring shipping is now closed.

Holly emailed earlier in the spring to ask if I preferred spring shipping or wanted to wait, and I requested spring. I am so excited to get them all planted and see how they grow.

If Holly/Blue Barn takes early orders for spring that's good to know. After Sherry's daylily alphabet in January I'm usually tempted to order something or other (despite my resolve). I'll have to check about the rust situation there though............Maryl

Maryl, I would imagine that Holly would be rust free especially in the spring. Her climate is much the same as ours and it did get cold enough to kill rust here last winter.

Unless she uses greenhouse culture. I wish people who have sales sites up north would put "rust free" in their intro page so I don't have to bother them in order to ask. Just because you are north doesn't mean the daylilies you sell are field grown (eg: Northern Lights, CT daylilies, etc.). But then I really don't want rust ever again, so I am of the "belt and suspenders" philosophy. I almost always discuss the rust issue with whomever I order from if it's my first time. Every once in a blue moon I'll take a slight risk, but usually a nursery has to be rust free in order for me to feel secure.........Maryl
