Kudos to the person who managed to propagate it. They're not easy from cuttings. Or did they use seed? I don't grow it but I'm familiar with it. I don't believe it needs any specific care and, unless your soil is very poor I wouldn't bother with fertilizer either. Just keep the base clear of weeds and prune out dead, diseased or crossing wood.

I just checked with her. She said she started them from seeds.She’s been growing them for about ten years. The specimen I got is about 6 feet. Thanks for the advice. Very m7ch appreciated. I’ve been out 3 times today just to smell it😃

I wondered if that was the case. The flowers of named cultivars tend to be larger. There was one growing against a wall at my old school and I always enjoyed it as I walked through the gates. I took cuttings without success.

unless a soil test indicates something is lacking in the soil.. i would NEVER fert a shrub...

they are not children.. they should not need to be fed.. nor educated.. nor clothed..

a few inches of a good mulch.. as it breaks down over the decades... should be just fine.. and reduce weeds ...as well as temper soil heat and moisture retention ....

a shrub is a shrub is a shrub ... no need for different rules for different plants.. in 99% of the cases ....

Hi Ken: I do coddle my hydrangeas (macrophyllas but not serrata, aborescens, panicles or oakleaf) and while my roses have good soil I also coddle them with alfalfa and seaweed fertilizer. I’m not sure it makes much of a difference with the macrophyllas but definitely the seaweed fertilizer makes a difference for me with the roses. The rest of my shrubs are on their own😃

After flowering it is one of the most boring shrubs I know.

Are easily propagated from seed (remove brown seed coat) but takes a while to flower for the first time (6-8 years).

@Dutch: so true. So placement is important. I have it at the back of a bed. The Fall foliage is a lovely buttery yellow.
