A great new article about “New Heucheras”

I want to share info about this great article I am reading with all you Heuchera lovers.

I love Heucheras / Coral Bells and have many in my yard all around my home. I subscribe to only one print magazine - “Fine Gardening” and today I received the April 2024 issue. I was excited to see 8 pages dedicated to a piece titled ”New Heucheras That Aren’t Just Hype”. The piece written by Richard Hawke describes the best performers from four year trials by the Chicago Botanic Gardens. This article has great pictures, lots of information on specific problems with tips on on to manage and a great reference chart. I’m using this great information for making my list of Heucheras to look for when I go plant shopping this spring.

Full sun beds are a challenge but these pics are spots in my yard with western exposures & so get full, hot, summer sun in the afternoon. Keeping them well watered helps a lot I’ve learned & these beds all have drip irrigation running through. I do have a purple Northern Exposure & also a black one which has purple undertones. I am in PNW - Vancouver, WA - so winters aren’t snow filled for us. We do have snow & ice events but usually only days in duration & though the foilage gets ragged the plants survive. What is your location?

In this second pic, the Heuchera is planted all along the front of the house & they are partially protected by the shrub plants behind them.

I love heucheras too! My favorite so far has been Wildberry. Which ones are at the top of your list?

Wildberry is one that’s in the botanical trial in this article - did you know that? It’s rated as excellent. I have so many faves. I lean to the colorful ones over the green tones. I love the Northern Exposure collection which is also mentioned in the article. I favor the purple. I think I have some of the Carnival collection - the Watermelon in particular. I love to use these as the ’flower’ color in my pots & planting beds.

Yes, I did notice Wildberry’s rating! I also have Cherry Truffles and another purple one, but Wildberry is the best looking one. I think I planted it 3-4 years ago. It hasn’t increased a lot, but it’s not dwindling down like the others.

I don’t have many heucheras because most of my beds are in full sun, but now that my trees are getting bigger, I will have more opportunities to plant more shade lovers.

I’m in Quebec, zone 3, lots of snow!

Do you know what the orange/peach one is in your first pic? It looks fantastic!!

@mazerolm_3a Those orange / peach are ”Forever Red” from the Forever collection. They do fade a bit in hottest temps here - later July - August. The tag lists sun to shade tolerance. My tag note shows planted 7/21 & this pic is from last summer so they have 3 summers on them.

Quebec - lots of snow! My paternal grandfather’s family emigrated from Quebec to SW Montana in late 1880’s. I grew up there at a mile high elevation at base of Rocky Mountains so I know a bit about snow! My parents attended a huge gathering of Beausoleil’s in Quebec some years ago & came back with so much information of our family name and history beginning with the first family member who immigrated from France to Quebec. Wonderful stories!
