painting a roof?

I’m thinking about having my roof painted. looking to hear stories and for general input from those that have had it done. Do you recommend doing it?

Also, if you’re feeling creative, I’d love some color ideas for the whole house, including roof. Thanks

Most pros will NOT recommend you do this. It's not a diy, and you need to consider the age of the roof, your climate, your penchant for inspecting the paint regularly, and a host of other issues. Not the least of which is peeling, or masking an underlying issue.

Is it the original roof, the second roof.............etc? Bottom line in most cases, will be rip the roof, or go add new to the first roof if only one is there..

Pros/cons below and to me, cons far outweigh painting.

Get a metal roof--any color ya want. This is an idea that is a non starter.

What is your purpose in considering painting the roof?

To my eye, the first thing that needs painting is the garage door and possibly the siding above it too. As-is, the garage is practically glowing with neon ”Look at me! Look at ME!”

Your house is currently a bit of a jumble of colors and textures, especially with the gray/blue accents. Is the body stucco? If so, the brick trim doesn’t belong and I might suggest painting (with BRICK paint) the brick trim to match the garage.

Why would you do that instead of several other things you can do to work with the roof you have? The roof, btw, harmonizes perfectly with your brick accents. That's probably why brown was chosen for the roof. It's an earth color, maybe not your favorite, but it's warm and fits well into landscaping. Think about removing your shutters or replacing them with cedar shutters. Like some others, I agree you don't necessarily need them at all.

House painted a sage color and garage door coordinated with brown roof. I don't know much about garage wood veneers, but investigate the idea to upgrade your garage door: https://www.garageskins.com

That looks like ashingle roof there is no way painting it will work or look right.Repaint the siding in a color that goes with the roof and the brick , take those shutters off double windows should not have shutters then spend some time and effort fixing the landscaping all better than painting the roof .Widen the trim around the windows and paint the siding maybe a color like this

I agree with all the others. The roof is a nice color. Goes well with the brick. Usually, I like shutters and would recommend keeping them, but, on your house, they look all wrong. I would paint the stucco and the garage doors, all the same color. Again, green is not my favorite, but, on your house a nice sagey type green is perfect. Landscaping really looks like it needs a lot of work. Flat top shrubs are never attractive, nor are round ball type bushes. The ones opposite the garage, should be removed. The rest of them need to be pruned and trimmed, so they look nice, unless, they are so overgrown, that nothing will help them, then they should be removed. Its a very nice house. Small things will improve it more.

Wow, these comments are very eye opening and VERY much appreciated! The shutters, garage door, landscaping – these are all things that I never even thought of to be issues but I can see them now.

So if I kept the roof as is – what color should I paint the trim and the siding of the house? The house is mostly stucco and then we have so much trim surrounding it so it makes color choice a little difficult. Please keep the suggestions coming – I love hearing everybody’s input and ideas for improvement.

    Thank you so much.

Warm colors that go with brown and red. Not gray or blue. Red or brown or beige or tan or green, for starters.

And I stand by my advice to dull down the garage doors.

If you go ivory, then taupe trim, or ivory. Here, even garage door is taupe.

If you go pale sage green, then pale taupe or cream trim.

It's wonderful to offer simpler alternatives to Design Dilemma people who post. Painting the roof would be a bad idea. It's easier to work with it--and it's very attractive--than to turn it into something it isn't.
