Bird deterrent spikes

Hello,

We are getting ready to install spikes on top of a couple beams on our covered back deck that the birds love to sit on and make a mess on our deck floor.


Anyone have experience with this and offer any advice they've accumulated? For example, how wide a space do we need to cover? The beams are 8" wide. How tall? Metal/plastic? Anything else we need to know?
