Has anyone had experience with Sunbelt Garden flame?

https://www.jacksonandperkins.com/garden-flame-sunbelt-floribunda-rose/p/29748/

So I have not grown any of the Sunbelt collection, (feel free to post all the awesome photos of your favorites or pretty pics) but I hear that they are supposed to do really well in humid conditions— hello 7B maryland. I haven’t seen this variety (garden flame) before. What do we think? I cant find much online, so I am not sure if this Kordes rose has been released elsewhere besides the states or if this is brand new all over.

Dianela, thanks for the good word on Vulcano. It was kind of an impulse addition so happy to hear you good review

Dianela, thank you SO much!!! that is super helpful. I've ordered Fiji, Quicksilver Quicksilver, and Tangerine Ambrosse. I have Earth Angel but its not getting enough sun and has barely grown at all. I was thinking and pompanella, dark desire ( I hear such mixed reviews), south africa, and plum perfect. I wasnt HUGE on the plum oerfect but everyone seems to love this rose, so it’s super interesting to hear they didnt do well for you. I havent seen Vulcano looking foward to seeing that one! what are tour thoughts on the Dark desire and Pompanella in terms of disease resistance and bloom power? Thank you again for all the super helpful info!!!!!!

Rifis, that’s interesting! I didnt know he bred it/ who he was before this! cool!

Kristine I hope vulcano does well for you, it was the little star of my garden this year. I didn’t realize I was going to like it as much as I did.

SophiaTheReader; Like other more experienced gardeners here always like to say “location location”. Some regional advice is definitely the best but even a few hours away seems to make a huge difference on how roses perform. Vapor is in Ohio and her Dark desire was a mess, mine is fantastic with perfect health. Moses and many others rave about quicksilver, mine have been subpart with lots of backspot and not much blooming. If they don’t convince me this year I will shovel prune all 4 of them. My earth angels are some of my favorite, their rebloom was slow the first 3 years own root, they did much better grafted from palatine. Pomponella also has great health here and blooms well (no scent).

All spring pictures (I just moved 2 miles away and left most of these behind)

    earth angel

    pomponella

Bordeaux is the best Red kordes I have tried. I dont love reds.

    Dark desire also great here

To be clear: I have no special knowledge that he (personally) bred it.

Wasn't he the photographer of the red rose you linked rifis?

  • last year

I followed the link that Rifis posted yesterday from HMF, and then looked up all of his posts on HMF. It appears that Thomas (someone referred to him by that name in a reply), is a deep insider at Kordes. When someone says something like "we're trialing it, and we'll decide...", they're an insider :-D

    @dianela7analabama what beautiful roses🌹

  • last year

Oh my goodness Dianela your photos literally made me gasp!!!! Your roses look so huge and happy!!!!!!!!!!!!! what are your secrets?! They’re just gorgeous huge plants. my Earth angel was very disapointing. I got it own root from Heirloom and it is still so puny. it literally is probably about 6-8 inches… one of the canes is actually wavy which id never seen… and i only got one small flush from it. to be fair its in a bad location with only about 3 hours of sun… going to transplant it this season. i cant get over how big yours is. Thats terrible about quicksilver 🫣 i should have thought about how he doesn't have humidity… lets pray mine does okay because trying to shovel out plants is not easy in our wet clay heavy soil. where did you get your pompanella? I'm thinking about asking grace rose if they can change my order from Francis Meilland to pompanella because i cant find it at the other two places i've ordered and the reviews on FM don't seem too positive here especially for places of humidity…

that is interesting about Dark desire! Might have to add it to the positive list from the maybe list with those pictures.

how could you leave that place with all the beautiful roses??? It must have been so hard after putting all that effort and money into your garden! it truly looks like a place where you could relax. But I could also see its ad exciting since you know what works well now and what to plant for your area. we just moved almost two years ago starting from scratch in the backyard ( we cleared the backyard it was just fenced in forest like the rest of the property) so i had a clean slate and there are already so many things i would have done differently and now im going to have to move a billion plants… ugh. Also to dig anything is a real pain cause the roots of these plants are like the width of my wrist. Needless to say even though i am building a garden( and putting in a lot of effort and time even with a 2 year old and 6 month old lol) i am looking forward to our more forever home, so i also understand. BUT my garden doesnt look half as beautiful as yours!

Dianela, is that more than one Bordeux??? Its so big, and it‘s supposed to be a smaller plant!! I’ve been looking for a good red. i have Mr. Lincoln but in year one it’s flowers were fuschia and FRIED so quick it wasn't funny. Hoping it's just a year one type of thing, but looking for a good red just in case

“Wasn't he the photographer of the red rose you linked rifis?”

The rose whose photo appears when the link is clicked changes each time one clicks on it. Try it; you’ll see. It selects from all the photos posted by him on hmf. I recollect one photo is a very old one of (possibly) the company’s founder.

Yes, I believe all the rose photos were taken by him. Some were likely taken with a camera similar to the one this guy is carrying

SophiaTheReader:Thank you very much for your kind comments.

I also got those earth angel from heirloom and they were tiny own root, they took 3 years to even bloom well. I have 3 plants planted 2 or so feet apart on that picture. So I guess that’s my secret, I plant multiple when I can. There are 2 dark desires on the picture and 3 Bordeaux. Kordes tend to be larger than specified.

you can kind of see the three more clearly here. My sculpture is 6 1/2 feet tall.

I bet your garden is looking great. Take it slow specially with two little ones I can’t imagine having time to even water a plant. Those pictures were the result of 5 years of working on it before having my baby and I was spraying religiously (not those kordes, but the hundred of Austin’s around).

I got my Pomponella from palatine grafted in multi flora which I love. I understand what you mean by moving roses being a pain. I am at a property only two miles away but I was only able to only move some of my top favorites because it was just too much. I also did many things I wished later I could change but it is part of the process I think, gardens are ever changing creatures.

Dianela, you are right about location. My 2 Quicksilvers are wonder and my Dark Desire was awful. Long thorny canes with blooms at the top only. My Bordeaux is slow to take off but getting there but Gypsy Soul took of like gangbusters so you never know. Could be size of plant and location, even location in your yard. Love Song wasnt doing as well as it could because of the shade from a Photinia ( that is going a way ) so I moved her to a really great location where she can thrive.

Kristine It is great to hear Gypsy Soul souls is doing well. Would you describe it is a more blue red? I only like the reds that lean towards blue instead of orange and I wonder if I need this one after hearing it is doing great for you. I totally agree, even a small change of location seems to make a huge difference.

Dianela is that alnwick by your bordeuxs?

is disease management still fine with planting them that close together? have you noticed any difference? i love the look it creates so it is a good idea! What did you use to use for spraying?

and yeah kids deff suck up all the extra time! im trying to get my lil guy into gardening. So far he IS into digging holes LOL!! if only the ground wasnt so hard to dig in and i could harness his working ability hehe. Im just glad he enjoys being outdoors with me.

The upright pink in the picture is Queen of Sweden which seems to do well here in full sun regarding black spot but rebloom is weak. I know planting that close together is usually a no no and understand that air circulation may help prevent disease, but. My experience here is that Bordeaux, earth angel and all those I mentioned being healthy here get minimal disease here even when planted close together. On the other hand I have planted other varieties alone with no other roses around for several feet and they still defoliate by June. So while spacing may be one contributing factor in the equation, it does not seem to be as key as genetics and good hydration. I am no expert and would not advise anyone to plant so close, but I like it.

I used to rotate fungicides. Pretty much any I could find at my local Lowe’s. Bayers disease control which has a group 3 was a regular, and then looked for any other with a different mode of action to avoid resistance. In the future I think I will make a small area where I will have varieties that require spraying. I am a sucker for all Austin’s and I can’t grow 99% of them without spraying.

    Gypsy Soul

Now that it is aging it is getting more dark undertones. This is a terrific rose.

Sophia - with such young children, I'm surprised you have time/energy to do anything. :) :)

Dianela - SWOON!!! Grouping your roses together (while knowing which ones will allow this...health) is a great idea...your yard is a Heaven on Earth!! :) :)

Kristine - ooooh!!! I love the 2nd pic of your Gypsy Soul!! Amazing!!

Dianela I think you’re right about the genetics. They look beautiful together, and I will have to try it. it reminds me of the way Diane’s roses look! i seem to really like that, so i will have to try it!! You should do a little spray area; something that isn't crazy to manage but still enjoyable! You'll have to keep us updated! what are your fav austins? i have queen of sweden, scepter, lady of shallot, golden celebration, gentle hermione, and silas marner. ive ordered a ton and im hoping to be able to secure jude, emma, royal jubilee, and benjamin sometime soon. Have you tried jude? ive heard such mixed reviews on that one. I do agree though, not great health. The only one that took awhile to get blackspot was QoS. Golden got blackspot the quickest for me.

  • last year

Rosecanadian, haha ain’t that the truth!! I think it was funniest when i got home from the hospital, from having the baby, it was late July early August so worst time… and I had all these new plants that needed to be watered ( don't have irrigation yet so alllllll by hand in 95 degree weather) eventually i had to send my husband out to do it since it would take an hour to two hours to water everything and the newborn couldn't be out in full sun that long obviously lol! My husband could not understand why in the world I had all these plants as he was shirtless trying to get them all watered for me (which should have been a daily thing but during this time ended up weekly and the plants deff suffered for it). It was a funny time! Glad this summer will not have all that commotion!

  • last year

Sophia - oh my. You were probably both sleep deprived so that would make you both extra irritable. You: I need my plants watered!! Him: Why do you have all of these plants? Grumble, grumble. I'm glad that's not a problem anymore. :) :)

  • last year

SophiaTheReader. I understand how it is. After I had my baby I just couldn’t maintained mine and it because a wild crazy mess by the end of the first year, even with my husband helping some. It wasn’t until he was walking that we were able to really go out there and do more.

I am an Austin lover even tho I can’t grow them well without spraying. I love the romantic blooms that nod even when I know that is considered undesirable by many. My favorite Austin’s regarding health are:

    Teasing Georgia

    Bathsheba

    Olivia

    Princess Anne

    Vanessa Bell

    Spirit of freedom

    Benjamin Britten

    Desdemona

    Lichfield angel

Nye Bevan (new this year and did well)

Silas and Eutacia are on probation. Their blooms are gorgeous and I will see how they do with black spot after a year in the ground.

I had Jude for only a year in my garden and I liked it, but I like all the globular blooms so I am biased.

Kristine that ruffled bloom is magnificent. Thank you for sharing. Ill add it to my list.
