Fireplace material identification

Hi,

Can anyone help identify the material of our fireplace mantle? We are interested in making it a lighter color, but not sure of which technique to use since we don't know the actual material. Our house was built in the late 90's and is in Florida. I think it's the original.

Cast stone. You could whitewash it?

We do want to make it whiter since our house walls will probably be SW greek villa. Will whitewashing work on the crevices? The holes themselves have a yellow/tan discoloration to them.

It would probably be easier to spray primer/paint OR you can sit there and brush the paint into those crevices-pain in the butt if you ask me but it can be done. It will just be time consuming.
