Dining Room Chairs…Please HELP!

last year

We need help deciding on chairs for our dining room. The wall paper is new, as well as the table, light fixture and mirror. The credenza in photo is not staying. The table is Theodore Alexander that we purchased from a boutique consignment reseller. We have two cats so fabric chairs might be an issue. We have looked at chairs online and in furniture retailers in our area but nothing has grabbed our attention. The last photo of a chair, that we thought might work, was taken at a Safavieh store. Thank you in advance.

If you’re leaning into transitional style, the chair you like will be lovely. Hopefully you can bring one of each…arm and side chair…home to try them on for size. Make sure they are a good fit at the table…seat/back height and the chair’s arm clearance at the table and also how they sit at the table. If a rug will be added to the mix, consider the rug size needed to allow the chairs to be pulled out and remain on the rug. I like how the chairs look elegant but comfortable and add some softness to all of the hard surfaces in a dining room. Perhaps a small comfortable decoy bench placed by the window might help to deter your cat from claiming the chairs. It could be moved to another room/window as needed when you’re using the dining room.

Finding a chair that will fit a table is a PITA.

If you ditch the credenza, then you can probably get away with the metal base on the chairs.

Honestly, the chairs look too modern for your table and house. I have cats, and mine would party hardy with chairs like that.

I have these dining chairs from Cox Manufacturing. Very comfortable and well built. I've had them for 24 years and have reupholstered them once.

    https://www.coxmfg.com/products/1860-hostess-chair/

They have lots of options: https://www.coxmfg.com/products/?categories=dining-room-chairs

They can make them in leather, fabric or COM ( customer's own material).

I have a table and chairs from Theodore Alexander in my kitchen, another very good brand.

On 2nd thought lucite is plastic. Not good for the environment. Get yourself some nice wooden chairs.

Wood dinig chairs with wood seats are very comfortable and you can wipe off any cat hair if cats decide to check them out. Have some seat cushions on hand to use if you or guests need extra comfort. Soften the look of the room with draperies and art.

I would do something like this with that kind of Asian type wall paper

It looks like your table has Art Deco lines. Try googling images of Art Deco chairs and see if anything grabs you. They tend to have high backs and narrow profiles. I like the shape of the chair you showed— just make sure they slide easily under the table. I find that hostess chairs with arms often look heavy and don’t pull close enough to the table. Stick with side chairs (and save some $$).

Gorgeous table! Great find! Here are a couple interesting choices to blend the styles you have going. One thing to be aware of is the drop down apron on the table. I think a chair that isn’t wood is best so it plays down the amount of wood in your room. I see you won’t be replacing the chandelier but it isn’t the right look for the table or the styling of table and wallpaper. If possible, I would think about changing that out to something with your gold accents and then do a mirror with a gold frame. It could go modern or traditional.

Depending on style you want to lean into here are some mirror options. Not sure how wide that buffet is?

You could contact the table manufacturer, Theodore Alexander, and ask which chairs were designed to coordinate with this table. https://theodorealexander.com/type/dining-chairs.html I agree that fully upholstered chairs attract cats, so a wood chair with upholstered seat (easily changed) would be a good choice.

The chairs you picked are beautiful and look comfortable. Make sure to choose legs that are a bronze finish or wood to echo table, and it'll all work. And measure, measure, measure. Elegant modern works perfectly in that room with existing chandelier. Table is gorgeous. Good job!

What you have now looks beautiful!! I would do fabric upholstered chairs - they are just more elegant to me and this space is so lush and elegant so far. I have two cats also and recently got fabric white patterned chairs in the same shape as the head chair there - I was very worried as well but it seems to be working fine. Fingers crossed!

How about something like this? It doesn't look like you are afraid of patterns and a touch of modern whimsy with your table would be gorgeous.

Any thoughts on above suggestions D K?

Actually, yes. This is our first time using Houzz for this kind of thing and I love all the suggestions. And thank you to apple_pie_order for the suggestion to contact the table manufacturer. I guess we were overthinking it and didn’t think to start at the source. Thank you to all that contributed!

Do post when you finish or along the way if needed. Happy hunting.

Just wanted to say that it must have been a bit 'scary' to select a wall paper pattern that would cover so much of the wall space but your choice is really lovely. It's elegant, keeps the room light and bright, yet it remains somewhat in the background so other pieces in the room can shine.

Score on that beautiful Theodore Alexander dining table!

I went on the Theodore Alexander website and found dining chair styles you may want to keep in mind. Dining chairs are usually a good chunk of change especially to enhance that table. Consider vintage chairs on chairish.com or even Facebook Marketplace, as you obviously have a good eye. Take your time finding the right chair. (not feeling the one you posted). Do you have a quantity and budget?

Gorgeous table! Here are a variety of ideas for your dining room. These are all on Wayfair.

Gray to complement the stunning wallpaper.

Make sure whatever you see, the seat is sufficient to be at a comfortable eating height. Having a removable seat for reupholstering is a good idea just in case you need to redo them.

  • last year

Make not of the height from the floor to your table apron. If you choose chais with ams, the arms MUST clear the apron. Otherwise they will nick or bruise it.

(Damn! Chairs with arms need to fit beneath the apron of your table. Sorry for spelling errors. I cannot edit my posts on my ipad.)

    What a lovely table!

I agree that an all-wood type might be best with cats in the picture.

I don't believe there's any rule against mixing modern and traditional styles - in fact, it can look really nice. The metal framed upholstered chairs seem out of balance to me, tho.

My suggestion is that you first choose a rug to ground that fabulous T A table. The paper is close to a Scalamandre and usually would belong in a bedroom or powder room. (I don't mean that I don't like the paper). So, a transitional, quality, wool rug for under the table; a darker gray chair on a brass frame (nod to the table).

You say the sideboard will be replaced...maybe art over it would work better (even over wallpaper) than the round mirror.
