If children live or visit here, nothing in front of the railing. A large piece of artwork or a triptych (3-piece) on the wall. The real issue is how to hang anything on that wall…we had a similar situation above a staircase on a large wall (double height) in a great room. We jerry-rigged a long wooden plank between an upper step and a tall step ladder on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. My husband provided support in the middle of the plank and I stood on the stepladder to stabilize it, while our brave son mustered amazing “Walenda” skills to carry and hang a free form wire mesh artwork on that wall. (Artist is Atticus Adams, Pittsburgh PA…check him out)

Hang one large rectangular piece of art to hang on that wall. Pretend the railing is a buffet and you are finding a long piece of artwork to hang above it.

This area is major visual part of your kitchen and the right large piece will really make the room feel more whole. No diptych or triptych pieces. One piece will visually unify the somewhat chaotic number of vertical rectangles (windows, doors, and bump outs) and wall jogs. Ignore that it is a staircase. No gallery wall or succession of pictures going down the stairs.

With one power piece of artwork, you won't need anything in front of the railing.

Easy enough to hang something on that wall using an A-frame ladder with independently adjustable sides.
