We need to see the whole space and also the spaces next to it like the LR. You get color from art IMO. Post the pics here in a comment DO NOT start another post . The table looks really tiny so maybe check the camera angle too.

Sure...thanks. Here are a couple of shots during the daytime. It is a small room in condo with a Chicago "railroad style" layout. Things are all over the place because of the painting (e.g., excercise bike will be moved). The room abuts a long hallway with dark blue walls. Would also be interested in window treatment advice for the dining room. I am thinking white sheers. i will get some plants to add some color. The table is 48"

Oh. another consideration...I need a chain swag for the light given where the junction box is (and the ceiling is plaster so moving the box would be very messy/costly)

Have you considered using different bulbs which will create a different light cast? Truthfully your fixture is not so bad. I would repaint the room a color that when lit offers an intimate dining space. I would chuck that rug and get something more organic, like sisal or a rug with a more attractive pattern. Once painted, and with a new rug the lamp will look totally different. If you would just rather change out the lamp then I would go with one of those structural, spacey bulb pendants which are so popular now. The light will be bright but you will be able to control the output better with installing a dimmer switch.

the junction box is above the wall clock, but the wire was run behind the panel between the beams in this case. When covered it's hardly noticeable.

That's a prime art wall there. I would move the candle holders.

Thank you! Lucy, I just had the room painted and, I think I'm just not loving the color, which is probably the heart of the problem. Good idea to try another bulb. I like the way the shade looks during the day, but during evening, not so much. I will try the bulb idea.
