I planted some tulips last fall up by the house where the deer (hopefully) won't get to them. I love a good display of tulips. What I don't like is replanting them every year, so I planted species tulips. Not quite the same effect as the long-stemmed Darwin types, but quite nice nonetheless.

Oh my gosh - tulips? They won't be blooming here for another four weeks or so! The daffodils have just started, I noticed some hyacinths coloring up, but the tulips are only showing leaves so far.

Since you posted a picture from last year, I have some shots of my tulips from last year too. I hope that isn't cheating! - I really love tulips in the garden, and the ones that I don't use as cut flowers all tend to return, multiply and flower very well for many years. (Don't hate me for that) I have tulips that were planted about 15 years ago along my front walk and they have gotten so thick this year I will have to dig and divide them. My summers are very dry and the soil is a fertile sandy loam which makes the tulips thrive here. I kiddingly call the areas of my garden "Little Keukenhof" that have tulips growing in them!

I don't think you can ever have too many tulips! When the new ones start to bloom this spring, I will post some more pictures, if that is okay with you guys.

@porkchop_z5b_MI: thanks! They were a Costco mix of Triumph tulips so probably won’t return this year but I got sucked in by the Easter pastel colors

Wow such gorgeous tulips! I have given up on tulips because they really don't reliably return - the foliage does, but no blooms. So most years I buy a couple dozen and put them in pots for a bit of spring color. It will be some time before they bloom yet though.

Sorry, Jeb, I think I DO hate you for that! :) Especially since I have tried some of the same ones you have! But I will forgive you as long as you post photos so I can live vicariously through your beautiful tulips.

I only had a few fosterianas. All finished already. Rained and blown to pieces. Daffodils almost over too. We're on to the later Pheasant's Eye narcissi. If the snails will leave them alone. They love the white flowers even more than the yellow. And they've already started on the hostas as soon as they poke above ground.

Beautiful tulips, everyone!!! The squirrels around here have a thing for tulip bulbs, and if they can't just dig up the bulb, they LOVE to clip off the tulip flowers just as they start to open. :p

Wow everyone! These tulips are just stunning! I have never seen such variety!! I would love to have some, but with all my hostas and companions I am not sure where to put them. Then, after bloom, you just have foliage left, right????

Spring bulbs are hit and miss here, a moderate spring and the show lingers, otherwise not unusual to go from frosts to the frying pan that blooms are gone within mere days.

@djacob Z6a SE WI: yes, only foliage left and you have to wait until it dries out to remove, so it’s good to plant it behind hostas and other plants that will hide the ugly foliage until it can be pulled out.

The ground is still frozen, but I was pretty excited yesterday when I noticed my tulips are emerging 🤩

For the last coupla years, i have only planted species tulips but have usually picked dozens of hybrid garden tulips most years until I noticed them looking a bit diminished this year. Am going to plant another 500 or so this autumn - am clearing spaces already with this in mind. I mostly edge my beds with them as they have a small footprint for the amount of bloom and colour...and they are incredibly cheap where I live - around $12 per 100 bulbs.

@User: that is cheap! Mine also diminished over the years so I planted about 400 fosteriana and Darwin last Fall. Hoping for a good show this year! 💐

Omg the thought of planting 400-500 bulbs makes me start shaking lol. I love the bloom of spring bulbs but hate planting them! Hadn't done any for the last few years but last year I bit the bullet and planted some more daffs and crocus and am certainly glad NOW that I did!

You guys MUST show us pictures of your hundreds of bulbs in bloom!

Dee, I tend to plant bulbs along the edges of existing vegetable beds so the soil is deep, friable, and easily trenched - I throw handfuls of bulbs in at a time and simply earth up. All the bulbs will reorient themselves and dropper roots will pull them down to a good depth. I certainly don't plant each bulb one at a time.

Failed (again) to even take pics for myself this year...which has been annoying since species tulips will increase at a terrific rate when happy so even though the garden hybrids have diminished a bit, the little wildlings have been outstanding.

These tulips have been growing in the same bed for over 15 years, every spring the sprouts look so small and insignificant I think that they can't possibly bloom again. Then they do this -

Just beautiful Jeb. I don't know how you do it. Mine just never come back the same way. As a matter of fact, I planted some Don Quichotte and they were spectacular the first year, ok the second and then for years after that the foliage came back but no blooms. I kept leaving them because each spring they looked so promising, but no, no more blooms. So I finally took them out.

Mazerolm, can you possibly tell me the variety names of your yellow cedars? I have planted 'Yellow Ribbon' all about the place, these grow like brutes, though others have not always proven nearly as hardy as them.

@FrozeBudd_z3/4: the largest one is Yellow Ribbon. Yes, it’s very hardy and a fast grower for me too! The 3 smaller ones are Jantar, and they’re not doing so well from up close, and they need to be protected during winter.

Yes, same issue with 'Jantar' it fares even worse in my harsher climate that I have decided out they must come. 'Yellow Ribbon' has always proven rock hardy reliable, though large and fast growing, of course though takes well to pruning. I don't know why I haven't gotten around to sowing a large number of YR seedlings to possibly obtain a more compact form!

All these photos have been so beautiful, so cheerful, so inspiring! Like someone else said, I am now thinking of adding more tulips to my garden, much as I hate planting bulbs! But I am thinking of the fosterianas and species - Kaufmanniana, Greigii, clusiana, saxatillis, bakeri, etc. I did plant them lifetimes ago, and loved them, but I guess they died out because I no longer have them and these photos have reminded my why I planted them to begin with!

I truly did enjoy my two pots of tulips on the back patio this spring - although both pots were the same which is unlike me. I think, though, that I got the tulips as a bonus/free gift for a purchase which is why they were all the same - Pink Impression, I believe.

Taking inspiration from floral's photo (which brought back vague nostalgic memories of my favorite childhood book The Wind in the Willows, lol) I do think I will add more pots this fall. (Sorry, just on the patio - no canal boat for me lol) I am not so inspired that I will pretend that tulips will grace my garden for years to come, like lucky Jeb, lol, but I will do more pots. And I'll try some of the species in the garden. Maybe they'll hang around for a bit longer.
