Ken - a jade plant? They do produce air roots from leaves along the stems. The leaves can be removed from plant, placed into rooting medium & rooted for a new plant. The stems cannot be planted deep like tomatoes. They’ll just rot. If your plant is very tall & gangly it’s not getting enough light. You live in MI so jade plants outdoors are not an option for you. Mine live outside in summer & spend the winters inside with me. Yours must be inside year round. If your jade is tall, gangly, sparsely leafed - I’d pinch everything back - cut off tops, let dry at ends & stick in well draining plant medium. Find a well lit - indirect light location in your house & put the cuttings there to see what happens.

I don't know if you can plant it deeper but you could treat it like a big cutting. Just lop it off, let the end callous over for a couple of days, then replant it in some nice new quick-draining soil. Don't water for two weeks, then start watering sparsly. That's how I started mine from a big branch off the end of a neighbor's enormous jade. I wish I could show you a picture of the cutting but suffice it to say, what became the trunk was about 2" in diameter.

No, it is not like a tomato, most plants are not. Just make cuttings, and plant those.

O yes, you can. Stooling or mounding is often done to increase basal plant growth.Jade plants have meristem nodes along the stem, so planting it deeper to encourage more stem growth is a legitimate method of propagation. I did this with an old and tatty chaenomeles I found abandoned in the street.

First hand advice is always good to receive but I question the validity in this case. Chaenomeles, flowering quince, is a woody shrub with vastly different growing characteristics from a succulent. A jade plant stem will rot - and fairly rapidly - if planted deeply into the soil, especially if the planting media is the slightest bit moisture retentive. The same can be said for most other succulents. That is one of the primary reasons jade plant cuttings and those of most other succulents need to be allowed to dry and callus over before planting....to prevent stem rots.

You could try it but it would not be my first choice if I valued the plant. Take cuttings, treat them properly and then plant in a very gritty, fast draining media. Do not bury the stem deeper than it currently is.
