la_la's idea of large planters with tall plants--cacti even--in front of the low wall would be beautiful. Initially I was inclined to advise taking down the wall entirely to open up the space, but can't tell how much privacy you need from the road.

Also, given your AZ locaation, Spanish style redwood pergola on the left from the back wall all the way to that big pillar would give you shade.

@Boxerpal's photos has some interior greenery. Just a couple oversized pots on the interior of that wall with tall trees/plants/cacti suited to your hot, dry zone would be so cool and inviting.

It would be hard to beat bougainvillea for a flowering vine in a hot place. Big pots would be nice and there are some sculptural cacti and agaves to put in them that are thornless and can survive the crazy high temps in Phoenix.

Is this a spot you would use for entertaining? To me it just looks like part of the entry so I would do a nice group of planters and maybe a water feature . I wish I could grow bougainvillea it is fabulous for hot climates and color.. Waht direction does this face ? I am not sure a climobing vine that is quite invasive would be a good choice on that wall Maybe look for a really cool outdoor piece of art for that big empty wall. I like the one with the lighting

A wall fountain would be wonderful! Look into those with Spanish tile and a rectangular base. Contemporary with old world flair.

@patriciacolwellconsulting - it is more of an entryway than an entertainment space. My backyard has a huge covered patio with lot of mature, green bushes and trees, as well as a koi pond with running water. That is what we spent most of our time. The front just looks barren and uninviting. A large art piece would be good and the addition of greenery. The exposure is E-S-W. Morning sun in front and evening sun in back.

@Gina Buskirk: Think of the entryway as an outdoor foyer. In that case, add some tall potted plants inside the interior wall with a small round outdoor table and a couple chairs for sorting mail, talking to neighbors, greeting people. Since the pandemic, I'm always pushing for front yard patios for neighborliness and connection to walkers, stroller parents, etc.
