Beautifu, Hoang! My dad has been asking me for suggestions on a red climber and I was going to send him this video when I noticed no scent For my dad that is a dealbreaker unfortunately, any suggestions for a similar climbing red that has scent? He’s in coastal SoCal. I may try to talk him into this one anyway, he has lots of other scented roses and this looks perfect for his new entry arbor.

Unfortunately Lady in Red is one of my biggest disappointments. Her flowers are large and beautiful but I bought her as a zone 4 climber. Every year she dies back to the ground here in zone 5 and has does not have long canes like a climber. She is basically a short squat bush. Planted 4/19 and picture taken 7/23.

My zone 4s I expect to have some if not all surviving cane. Climbers I expect to throw some long canes I can tie up to the support.

Pros include the Japanese Beetles largely leave her alone. She blooms very well in the heat of the summer while my other roses shut down. The flowers age well and seem to fall off nicely without looking too ragged.

I don't want to rain on anyone's happiness with this rose but do want to inform anyone looking it up and seeing zone 4 that it doesn't really behave like one. Spring is the time I am most displeased with this rose since we are looking at masses of dead cane to cut out.

mmmm, thanks for sharing your experience of it in zone 5, it seems to perform nicely in the hotter climate which is where i'm at, i guess for the people in the cooler climate, they will have to find something else

I’ll probably still recommend this to my dad, he loves those big blooms and red and big blooms with scent might be a tall order. It also has to survive intense SoCal sun and dieback isnt an issue for him obviously.

How many Lady in Red plants do you have on that trellis? She is gorgeous!

Heather, One fragrant true red climber for warm climates is Don Juan. I have 2 now. I love DJ for Florida. I am not sure how it performs in Cali. It takes the heat and humidity well here.

@sultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish) Thanks for the Don Juan suggestion, somehow I completely forgot about that one! Probably because last time I encountered it I couldn‘t smell a thing but I apparently have a somewhat defective rose nose 😂 My dad smells many roses I can’t smell so that might work for him.
