Help! Framing for double sided fireplace is too deep

Hi everyone,

We are replacing our double sided fireplace and redesigning the wall (picture is of old fireplace) and the framing is 7/8" too deep for the new insert. Adjusting the depth would mean we'd have to adjust everything to the ceiling, plus move electrical, in order to keep the drywall flush. What options do we have to avoid reframing the entire wall?

Oh dear that is a bummer

Could you find another insert? Maybe you could make the wall more narrow.

Sorry I do not understand the issue . Are you keeping the double sided FP ? Waht was wrong with the old one ?You say you are redesigning the wall so what exactly do you mean by that ? I think if the wall is being redesigned just design it to fit the new FP.

We've no clue what model you have. That model whatever it is, has specs and they need to be followed. You either redo a wall.......or you don't use that insert, or your drywall isn't flush.

Is the new fireplace gas, electric or wood burning?

If the instructions say you cannot have the framing beyond the fireplace due to clearance to combustibles, you may have to look for a different fireplace. With that said, you may be able to rip out a portion of the wall about 12" around the opening and re-frame it with metal studs, then float it back out to the original depth with hardie board or some other non-combustible material.

Also, I'm curious why you are removing the existing fireplace. Is there something wrong with it, or are you going to something linear? If it is the black metal you don't like, you can cover that up.

Please post the model number of the new fireplace so we can look at the instructions.

When you wrote that you are redesigning the wall - what does that mean?

There appears to be a disconnect between the way the current wall is constructed + the look of the fireplace surround. Are you changing the fireplace surround to be more modern OR the wall to be more tradtional? What does the rest of your home look like?

I have a double sided fireplace between my study and living room - I recently converted it from wood burning to gas logs (no one explained to me that you had to keep the glass doors closed on both sides when operating it as a wood burning fp - which I hated = didn’t use very often compared to wood burning fp in kitchen or gas log fp in bedroom).

HOWEVER - that did not require a new insert. If you provide the exact insert model + specs = more ideas help from professionals.

This project has the potential to be a really nice new design feature!
