My GA Garden Spring 2024

last year
last modified: last year

Six years after being bit by the rose bug after seeing Good as Gold at a local nursery, and 16 bushes later, not counting some ground cover Drifts too - here I am on a journey I can't reverse.

I am still fighting tree roots and heavy, beaten GA clay in the only flower bed I have with sun exposure, and I am growing most of them on my back deck in containers, but I am looking to expand to a new bed after a tree came out of there last fall.

These are some pictures from Spring 2024.

Olivia Rose Austin, South Africa, Plum Perfect, Good as Gold (column), Easy Does It and Ring of Fire (row).

Magic obsessions, Belinda's Dream, ORA at night, EDI, Plum Perfect and Good as Gold in bouquet.

    Artist you've outdone yourself !!!

    I'm trying to remember what EDI could be - Easy Does It ? That's a gorgeous shot of the aged bloom. Your roses sure do great in your care.

    The artistic little house is cute as a bug's ear .

    Thank you so much Melissa, berrypiez and Susan!

    Yes, EDI is Easy Does It. Great rose for me and the best impact in the landscape when I look at it on the deck from my kitchen window.

    Blooms last long on the bush. Mine needs some staking because the blooms get to heavy but overall, I would say this is my best rose. Or maybe a tie with Olivia Rose.

    Your garden is beautiful and an amazing achievement, Artist. I’m eight years bitten and totally agree, there is no way back to the pre-rose era and no reason why we should want to!

    So beautiful! Thanks for sharing, I love everyone’s garden photos!

    Im in central NC, mine are coming along but a couple weeks behind you. Truly the most exciting time of the year for rose lovers is when our first buds start to burst open!

    Thank you all so much. It wouldn't have been possible without the support of this amazing community here.

    It's certainly progress from the time I started out in Spring 2018, looking at an old KO rose left over from the previous owner. Not sure what she thought planting it so close to the tree but it was blah, if not desolate outside at that time.

    Since then we renovated the front yard, I lined up this front bed along the driveway with Coral Drifts (coming in now), three more roses to the right, and other plants, the rest on the back deck.

    All in all, it's finally pretty chirpy around here :)

    Aaaaand I have three more roses on the way.

    I keep telling myself I must get rid of one to get another, just to keep the number under control, but I can't decide to get rid of any of them because they are all so beautiful and none of them does particularly bad.

    I snatched out a couple of them last Fall when I suspected RRD and a Drift this Spring for the same reason.

    The container roses on the deck are doing the best and since this place is quite generous, it could accommodate a few more :) ...Sadly, my time is not (generous).

    Either way, I am in love with all these beauties and they seem to get better every year.

    My latest love is Beverly. I bashed her on her first year even knowing she did not get a chance to show what she can do. The few summer blooms were washed out and opened too much, too fast, but now in its second year she is spectacular. When I pas her by, there's a waft of amazing fragrance and she sits so ... HT-proud and upright, in a shrubby form with floribunda-level bloom. I heard people being disappointed in her and I can't fathom why.

    Either way, one can't be rid of any of these gorgeous things, demanding as they may be.

    These are all fantastic looking. I've often encouraged people to grow climbing pinky so glad you persisted. So sorry I lost mine to RRD. It was as big as a VW! Remember you starting out and how far you've progressed! Do you hand water? Perhaps you could put the watering on automated drip to helpWith your tongue. That should be help with your timeMotion poin Wartime in motion Or time and motion . Hope you understand...

    Vapor,

    Yes, I do water by hand and this has become a bit of a problem as the number of roses went up. However, for those on the deck in containers I water fast with a heavy-duty hose nearby; in the ground I only have four bushes for now, minus the Drifts which they kind of fend for themselves.

    I'm not sure how to do a drip irrigation system. I looked into it before and it sounded either too complicated or too expensive to have someone else install. I am still trying to manage things by hand watering.

    Artist,

    You're,'cooking with gas,' gas not being as accepted as electricity these days, but just the same, the expression fits your progress thus far, and in only six years! Enjoy the trip. Every new rose purchase is a combination of discovery and potential endearment. The longer a good, dependable rose bush continues under our care it becomes like an old friend...minus the wrinkles and wobbly knees!

    @Moses,

    I had to look it up! :)

    Thank you so much. This has been my best year yet.

    @Vapor,

    I heard Pinkie is a continuous bloomer in some yards, or at least has another flush in the Fall. Mine has this one gorgeous flush in spring and then the Pinkie shop closes down. I eventually figured out it was because of all the trees around the clearing that leaf in heavily after spring. Once the leaves are all in, it probably doesn't get enough sun to push for another flush. And so I must wait until next spring but he when he's on, it;s great. (For whatever reason, I think of Pinkie as a boy even though it's so pink. :)).

    Another picture of the deck with Plum (barely in picture to the left, ORA and Beverly) ...and some bouquets I can increasingly afford to bring in since there is more production these days, happily :).
