May I join you? Even though I'm in 8b/9a, there's only one rose blooming in my garden right now. You're making much faster progress than I am. LOL.

    Rhapsody in Blue

    Feiy, sure! Lovely rose!

@Feiy (PNWZ8b/9a), the color of Rhapsody in Blue is so pretty! I am surprised that you would have late bloom in your zone. This is an abnormal year, or Seattle is always like this? The Dr Robert Korns you gave me last year has become my favorite. I love its dainty flowers and musk fragrance. It lightens up the shady corner

No roses here yet but I have buds!

    newbie,

So happy to see your Dr. Robert Korns blooming. It's a monster, growing up to 12 feet long, but can certainly be kept down to around 6 to 8 feet. If you give it some support and train it horizontally, it will reward you with many times the number of flowers.

Roses are usually in full bloom in Seattle from mid May to the end of June, depending on the varieties. Because we're so far north and close to the ocean, we have a long cool spring. Summer doesn't start until the Fourth of July. LOL.

Here is today's photo. The pink on the far right is Aloha, and the red/yellow buds of Lady of Shalott on the left are about to open. The tiny spring heat wave (about 79F) that started today is definitely helping.

@elenazone6, again I am amazed at you Distant Drum! I feat I should give up seeking it after fall out of Garden Rose llc order, and canceled homedepot one. Maybe someday they will show up in our local stores.

@Feiy (PNWZ8b/9a), I really fall in love with Rhapsody in Blue after seeing your second photo. Everything looks so right. LoS should be a great match.

Pomponella is lovely, thanks much again. And thanks for recommending Aulaya. It is a great plant by itself as well as a rose companion

Beautiful roses, everyone. I think that Eustacia Vye is very pretty indeed. No roses here yet, but I do have buds. It's been a long, cool spring here, perfect for bulbs to have a long bloom time, but too chilly for most other things to really hit the gas. Therese Bugnet will be my first bloomer of the season, the buds are showing color yet still staying closed for sooo long it's agonizing to wait! 🙃

Magpie, I have 2 Eustacia Vyes. The second one I bought this season in a pot, and it has a normal size. The one in the picture I planted last year as a bare root, and it's still extremely small. We'll see how it progresses... Diane told us the David Austin roses are for beginners. :) All my David Austin roses are growing very slowly. If someone has had success with them in zone 6, please share your secrets.

Newbie, I completely agree about DD, I have tons of her pictures, and every day/season it looks like a different rose, just amazing!

@elenazone6, I think you mean Distant Drums by DD. Just amazing it can look so different each time yet always beautiful!

Your Eustacia Vye is absolutely lovely. apricot color, ruffling petals. Reminds me of Augusta Louis, another rose that is elusive to me

    Some blooms today.

Etoile de Hollande's scent is unbelievable.

    The most fascinating South Africa.

The bloom of Teasing Georgia is bigger than I thought.

And newbie, this one is for you. Rhapsody in Blue.

    His neighbor, Lady of Shalott.

@Feiy (PNWZ8b/9a), wondering how you get the roses to bloom so deep and rich colors. My LoS is beautiful, but always has much lighter color. Raspberry in Blue is amazing.

Feiy, wow , so intense color!! Very nice roses!

Feiy, I'm really enjoying your rose combinations! They have such a 1930s feel!

newbie & elena If you get as many cloudy days as we do, the roses will have fuller tones. LOL. It's a trade-off. Most of my roses are growing in part shade (1.5-4hr direct sun). Although I get fewer flowers, they last longer and get richer in color.

VaporvacAha you got it! I'm an old soul.

Elena, your garden is beautiful! How old is that New Dawn rose of yours? I planted 3 for the front my house last autumn and can’t wait for them to grow like yours!!

  • last year

Only 1 rose has bloomed for me so far - a 3 year old Claire Austin i. A container. This is the first year that I have blooms of this size and about 30+ buds about to open!

  • last year

Elena, my goodness! What a fabulous retreat you have created. We all know the work that has gone in to your beautiful garden, hats off and applause for a job wrll done.

Susan. look at the size of Clair’s bloom, what a perfect color as well

Feiy, what intense and vibrant colors!! Is Etoille a once bloomer?

  • last year

Thank you, folks! We were working hard and creative to make this garden happen!

    Kitty, I have added names.

Susan, the New Dawn is 3 yo, but its getting about this size in 2 years! On year 2 huge branches started to develop. Very vigorous rose, purposely planted to cover the fence. Hope to make her rebloom this year.

  • last year

Oh it’s a beauty on your fence!! I can’t wait for mine to look like yours, Elena!

  • last year

My first rose of the season, Earth Angel! Also blooming is allium, clematis, snapdragons and a gigantic peony.
