I probably shouldn't be commenting, since mine looks far worse than those examples, but I can tell you it isn't pruning.

The best examples I've seen were in full sun in a cool climate.

They gracefully develop best without pruning like the top photos. Their natural shape is gorgeous. My plant in Alaska also self seeded. I think it is too hot here to get one.

I grew it in east Tennessee until the vole/mole armada feasted on it one winter.

I've seen two that made me want to grow it. One at Suzy Verrier's in Maine. It was a thicket of canes and color and wonderful look at the very end of bloom. The second was on the peninsula in Ontario and it wasn't as large (it was fairly young) but it looked so good against the colors of a brick house.

The trees in back of our house have grown agressively. I wonder if glauca could handle a early morning late evening sun with heavy shade midday. The neighbor's Jack Russel is working on the vole/mole population of our hill top.

I’ve never heard of voles until you all on this forum. We get ground squirrels and small gophers (in our pasture not yard) but I don’t think we get voles. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Plenty of other rodents around for sure.

That might work Ann. Probably better than here for sure.

I think Rosa glauca is quite possibly the best rose there is, for landscaping purposes. And I can attest that it will grow (and flower) on the north side of a building, with only early-morning and late-afternoon sun at this time of year.

If there's a trick to encouraging a more graceful growth habit, I'd love to hear it.
