First off, there are many people here who have painted the fireplace and wall just like it is here. It's not horrible. But, not what you would do.

I'm wondering how another sofa placed back to back with the one you have could create two seating areas?

At the very least, paint all the dark bricks off white and only have a few well chosen objects, if any, in the mantel. Add a large bunch of birch logs in firebox and a basket of logs on the hearth, and leave that whole fireplace setup plain for now. Work on the rest of your living room and return to the fireplace later on.

Your room could look something like this with a rug to anchor it and plain white fireplace not all cluttered up as it is now.

If you really, really hate it...You could just wall off the entire fireplace.

Block off the firebox. Then decide if you want to regain the floorspace or don't mind losing a bit more. Two options. Knock off the mantel & supports and remove the hearth. (Will need to add wood flooring.) Then fur out the wall and drywall it. OR bury it behind a newly framed wall and drywall, leaving the brickwork untouched. The receptacle & switches can easily be turned around and accessed on the other side of that wing wall and you won't have to worry about adding flooring.

At the other end of the room, I would remove all of that cabinetry as well as the window seat. Neither the style of the fireplace or the style of the cabinetry are in sync with the contemporary style of that room. Perhaps the cabinets can be used elsewhere or even in the garage or basement.

It’s not that bad. Doesn’t go with the other side of the room, so, easy first thing would be to paint the wall white. Leave the wood mantle, then decorate it how Jan suggested in her drawing.

I'd paint the fireplace the same color as the wall color and see if that changes your thoughts about it. If that works, I'd replace the mantle with something less formal. Something that looks more like a beam and less like crown molding. Paint it first, that's the cheapest solution.

Same color as wall, like deegw said. I assumed white, but since you are on a decor site, probably not just white. 😁

thank you, this is what i was thinking. to make matters worse, this is a double sided fireplace. behind this fireplace is my dining room. to make matters worse, they are off centered from eachother. two chimneys. couldnt even imagine the weight on the home.

i think we are going to paint it the same color of the living room. i agree with the mantle.

Go with the flow. Here's a single Barn Style Fireplace Door that will create balance. I tried adding other objects such as plants and a wood holder to the hearth, but I found it looked best with nothing on the hearth but the door. Also, I could not paint the hearth white easily in photoshop, but you get the idea.
