Red buds are an under-story tree, so probably can not stand the wind that an Oak would. However, I have seem old gnarly redwoods that have been around for a long time, and are currently in some exposed location. In Eastern North Carolina, Redwoods seem to be able to survive most any thing, and at times almost seem like a weed.

As long as you aren't paying $$$ for a giant transplant go ahead.

Redbuds aren't legacy trees here anyways.

They also don't get big enough to cause problems removing them. If I have one I no longer want or like it can be removed on the cheap.

They aren't white oaks BUT do make me smile with their neat leaves, zig zag twigs, flowers and sometimes decent fall color. So when one pops up in a decent place I'll save it.

Thanks for the responses. This would be a purchase from a local tree farm. I've done some digging around and apparently the Eastern Redbud is a 4-8 zone tree and we live in a 5b zone. I think we're going to get the tree and see what happens.
