Oh yeah - I use my strimmer for loads of stuff - epimediums, erigeron, hardy geraniums, anthemis deadheading narcissus...and I use the hedge trimmers on the roses.

Nope, haven't come across any hardy geranium resistant to even my lightweight battery powered strimmer, with regular string-line...but if I was using it to chop down brambles, I might change out the cutting head to a metal blade, and use the petrol Stihl...but only because I haven't upgraded all my garden power tools to batteries.

Back when I had a handful of small shrub-roses, I did all that angled cutting with secateurs, branch by branch but dealing with 50+ (used to be over 100) large (actually enormous) roses is of a completely different order. I cut them back after flowering, sometimes even twice for vigorous growers such as Rambling Rector, r.helenae, Pleine de Grace, Ayreshire Splendens and the like - more like topiary, I suppose. I do a more targeted winter prune on climbers and shrubs, cutting out old, diseased or dead wood - have to use either my battery pruner or a pullsaw, and generally take a couple of older canes from the base of the ramblers.

I do believe there have been various comparative studies regarding the use of powered hedge-cutters...this isn't just some wild experimentation on my part but is sound, evidence based horticultural practice. Will try to find links.
