Before I can respond to your question, I have to wipe the drool off my keyboard. My word, they have some lovely and unobtainable roses (for us in the US). Even with the obvious photoshopping of the colors, there are some striking roses. I'd crawl through broken glass for Modarosa or Ottavio Missoni, so in your shoes I'm be buying those just to give them a try.

Among those I have experience with, Twilight Zone might be a good counterpart for Quicksilver. It doesn't get that big for me but in zone 9 it's another matter. Tempi Moderni is a striking bright colored rose that I keep begging to survive my winters (it's on its sixth "last try" this year) and I'm pretty sure it would be modest sized for you.

Austins that stay small for me would be Lady of Shalott or Boscobel, but any Austins given that much water and heat might explode for you. Desdemona is lovely and at 17.5 Euros it's a deal.

Wow, there are some price differences in their roses! I can't imagine paying 94 Euros for a rose however much I wanted it (even Mokarose).

Boscobel gets huge for me, so it might not stay small in Spain. Definitely small and quite a wonderful, continuous bloomer is the older Austin, Tamora. Could it be found in Europe? This rose is the smallest of my Austins and I've grown it for many years. And Tamora is in a full sun scorching spot and does just fine. Diane

The Rose Barni site always puts me in a tizzy. ”Lake Como,” ”Niso Fumagalli,”, and ”Rita Levy Montalchini (sp?) - I’d cross the seas for those. I do agree that the colors are seriously oversaturated.

Roses Unlimited has Niso Fumagali in its June sale at present, and often sells Rita Levi Montalcini. No crossing the seas for that one! I agree about the tizzy though.

Cynthia, I am determined to get a Twilight Zone this year, having missed out on it several years in a row, so that is definitely on my Barni list.

Most of the Austins mentioned, LoS, Bosco etc. I already have or they are freely available here at (ahem!) even lower prices, but I have never seen Tamora, Diane. I would happily pay a premium to get her, but many of the older Austins you can get seem lost to commerce here.

I do love experimenting with new suppliers/breeders and since it would be discourteous in the extreme not to try at least one of Barni‘s own roses, I really appreciate your suggestions. Many of those, such as Tempi, Niso and Rita, would blend well in my existing beds.

I also saw on an old revived thread tuderte’s amazing Sans Souci, probably much too large for me, but wow, it might be worth bulldozing some space somewhere to grow that!

None of the single HTs cost more than 17.50. The most expensive roses in their catalogue are the "alberelli ad alto fusto"- weeping tree roses,which cost 41.90 euros,but this type of plant is always expensive .

Though Barni's photographs are undeniably not of high quality, this is an honest rose nursery with good,big,healthy plants. I feel the need to write this since so recently on the forum we have been seeing rose sellers of highly questionable if not inexistent integrity with extremely sophisticated photographs of roses attempting to sell people teeney tiny sticks of plants (many illegally obtained, to boot) for outrageously high prices. I'd prefer cheesey photography but beautiful plants instead of the other way around!

Thanks for the clarification Bart - I didn't notice that it was a collection for the higher prices. In general their prices were excellent and I can always look up the photos somewhere else to see what the colors really look like. I can't take advantage of their roses but it's wonderful to hear that they have healthy plants. I have enjoyed the few Barni roses I have been able to obtain and hope some day more of their offerings will move this direction

Don’t know if you are considering a climber, but Barni has this incredibly fragrant variety Brise Parfum (Perfume Breeze in US) . It blooms very freely and has a fragrance that wafts like no other. When I purchased a plant last year, I left it outside on my patio and could smell it inside the house if the breeze blew the right way. Tom Carruth had this impressive dome structure built at a famous public garden so folks could best enjoy the scent

And lucky for you, it’s Barni own variety, and you don’’t need to worry about people crossing the continent to critique you about purchasing a legal plant.

I have so few places for climbers though. One is the above arbor and that already has Quicksilver and Pax competing for it. I am very tempted to try Brize though. Perhaps I should get it anyway, then have my usual rose panic about where to put everything!
