I would need a ton mor einfo as to what your style is , how much money you want to throw at the the space ? I cannot see hoe to remove the step down without a huge amount of money spent . It is obviously an addition and the FPwill never be centerd I think maybe reove the shelving on the left in the larger space wll mount the TV there at the proper viewing height on an articulating arm the arrange furniture to face bot the FP and the TV That would be the cheap option . Step up do the whole floor that same as the rest of the house remove all cabinetry and then hang the TV as I mentioned or on a nother wall. A lot deoends on seeing the whole space to understand how this area actually connects to the rest of the house . That needs more pics to show that whole space and a to scale floor plan ongraph paer of that space and name the spaces through those doorways. You could build the fireplace out so that it extends to the ceiling. Find a tile you love and tile up to the ceiling. I would eliminate the bookcases and build out the wall to the it's approximately 6 - 8 " less than the fireplace. You can decorate in your style. If possible, I would build the floor in the sunken room up so that it's flush with the hall floor. Best of luck on whatever you decide to do. I'd love to see some "after" pics once you're done.

It’s beautiful woodwork and cabinetry. Without destroying it, I’d say use decor to balance the heaviness of the fireplace with some artfully placed items on the shelving to the left of the fireplace. So, starting with the top shelf, place tall decorative items to mimic the white box of the vent. Maybe a pair of taller white vases, as an example. Then, with the rest of the shelving immediately to the left, add some eye catching larger pieces, perhaps a large “coffee table book” and some chunky sculptures, encapsulating a bit of the gold tone of the fireplace surround as well as colour complementing that stunning woodwork. As well, a large floor standing potted tree further on the left might help to consume some of the space to provide more balance.

If you decide to remove the cabinets, Habitat for Humanity will most likely take them.

It’s the livingroom (rambler). You come in from the front door, and then the step down into the livingroom. It’s not an addition.
We just bought the place, I’m just unsure how and have no vision beyond Pinterest and Houzz ideas.

You might consider removing the built-ins around the fireplace and then you'd be able to easily fit a TV over console next to the fireplace. Notice the TV next to the fireplace in this design of ours:

It looks like a great space, if you're looking to update it you could try removing the built-ins and getting rid of the step down. Perhaps look at some fireplace designs with TVs and consoles.

The room is beautiful as it is. It may seem off balance right now...

Why not take your time and live with it awhile and take your time arranging/rearranging with what you have now. Actually living with some different arrangements? What seems like a difficult situation now might not be so difficult. You may need to buy a piece of furniture (sofa) to tie into the space and balance the room.

The 'stepdown' will fade away as you live there. The wood is beautiful.
