Small walk/reach in closet - yay or nay?

Making a closet for my primary bedroom and taking some space from the bedroom beside it… looking for ideas to maximize functionality and space since it’ll be the only closet in the bedroom & there won’t be room for any dressers :(

The max dimensions for the space is 85”Wx40”D (~37.5”D after making a tiny partition wall. The ceilings are 89.5”H.

Unfortunately it’s not big enough for a walk in, but because we probably need more than 85”, this is what I’ve come up with!

Note: there will be no door to the closet.

Current plan:

left side: single rod at 66” (or maybe 67”-68”), shelves at 70” and 80”
middle: ikea sektion 30”Wx15”D, drawers and shelving, top shelf at 80”
right side: double rods at ~40” and ~77”, top shelf at 80”

Thoughts & advice appreciated!

I second the Elfa Systems at The Container Store. They have lots of options and if you bring your dimensions and a list of your needs they'll do the design and installation (optional) for you. I've been very impressed. They have a big sale a couple of times a year which makes it even sweeter. Worth a look.

Look at the ELFA closet system from The Container Store.

You really might get more out of a reach-in closet with doors across the whole thing than what you're showing. Corners aren't very useful. Look at closet systems and consider both alternatives before you build the walls.

I think the reach-in would be more convenient, but as a closet for 2 people, I’m worried about the space! Will space plan this on a floor to better determine the usabiliyu of the corners!

Check out closet lift bars to take advantage of height of closet. These are great for storing more seldom used or seasonal clothing and for space efficiency. You need a good 24” of depth for hanging clothes with full width of hanger and walk in space.

I have thought of doing a reach in similar to this and then having Billy Bookcases on the other side in the other room... Or I could do this with the full depth and put some hooks on the wall? Definitely easier to reach into, but can store less stuff. Trade-offs :(

I've never heard of closet lift bars, but just looked them up! They seem interesting and great for tall spaces!

Do you have room for dressers in your bedroom? we have small closet/bedroom and have storage bed with giant drawers (amish) and dresser and clset is just hanging stuff. i’d do reach in/all hanging incloset but depends how much you need to hang.

Ad no, there's no room for dressers in the bedroom... would only have room for under bed drawers!

We used the Elfa system to quadruple our reach in closet space in a 1956 house!

Count me among the Elfa fans. I used them in previous house and a new-build condo w skimpy storage space. A storage bed w built-in drawers has also been a life saver. It’s my linen closet. West Elm has nice options.
