The west side is a bit too strong an exposure. I have Pieris Cavatine planted on the east side of my condo and even they get a bit scorched without consistent watering. Best in morning sun but afternoon shade.

Many thanks for your reply. Do you have any suggestions for an alternative foundation plant with high deer resistance that would do ok on the west side of my house?

As mentioned above the west side has areas of full afternoon sun but also areas that don't receive more than 2-3 hours of direct sunlight. I'm looking for a evergreen background plant that either grows slowly to 3-4 feet or can be pruned to that height.

I have considered Japanese holly (Ilex Crenata), but worry if deer resistance is high on these shrubs. Any other shrub suggestions you have or experience with this particular holly would be helpful. Thank you!

You are not short of choices :-)) Abelia grandiflora (especially the variegated ones, which tend to stay small and compact), Ilex crenata (Helleri will stay within your height requirements without pruning), dwarf kalmia, Mahonia Soft Caress, various selections of smaller nandinas, Pittosporum tenuifolium 'County Park Dwarf' or 'Tom Thumb' or a wide selection of dwarf conifers. Lonicera pileata or nitida are good choices as well but may require some pruning.

All of these have proven to be pretty much deer resistant in my gardens.

Thank you for your advice and suggestions! I will plant the Pieris in a shadier spot and choose one of the alternatives for the west side of my house.
