Hey y’all!
We need ideas for our front yard. We ant only bushes and shrubs and no flowers. We live in a city where there are tons of deer so the plants must be deer proof

Can’t wait to see some ideas

Please take another photo from further back so we can see the whole house in one shot. Ideally stand on the other side of the street. Also please tell us your approximate location (nearest city & state). Thanks!

Better, but seeing the entire house with a little of what's on either side would really help.

Basics such as clear edging and soil improvement can start right now, before you choose plants. (Edging just means making a clear, sharp delineation between lawn and bed. It can just be a crisp cut slit trench. It doesn't need to be hardscape.)

First I would change the exterior siding color. As for landscping best to go to the local gardenb center to find out what works best in your area and is deer resistany . I wonder why no flowers at since IMO a good landscape desin is a nice mix of everygreen and perennials . But I have seen sone ver attractive designs with only many colors of green, Your grass does not look happy so IMO a good soil test for sure to see what needs to be adeed or fixed in the soill

The lawn could use a tree, a medium size tree. You could create a planting bed around it as an 'island'.

Since no flowers, anyone here in California with ivy and juniper, the deer won't touch at all.

You need groundcover in the flowerbed in front of the porch and shrubs and groundcover along the rock facade.

You can get color with plants that have variegated leaves or purple leaves, etc. A local nursery will know which plants are deer resistant in your Zone. No one will guarantee a plant will be deer-proof.

She said she had only bushes and shrubs and no flowers. She didn't mean she doesn't want flowers. Give her flowers!

Which direction does the house face?

Do you really not want flowers, or are you afraid the deer will just eat them all?

"Flowers" aren't a specific kind of plant. Even if you only have trees and shrubs you can still have flowers. Or do you object to anything which might bloom?

How deep is that planting area? It looks a little tight to accommodate anything more than a single row of smallish shrubs, which is never a good look. It should be 6-8 feet deep at a minimum. I'd also second floral's suggestion to provide a more defined bed edge and some soil improvement as well - do that now before you plant anything. And also consider the direction/aspect the bed faces. Shade, sun, a combo. Is rain water able to hit the entire bed or do roof eaves get in the way?

I'd also agree that asking at a local garden center will make the most sense. They will carry what's well suited for your location, as deer in different parts of the country have different appetites.

Agree that your bed is only marginally big enough for bushes/shrubs. Ideally it should be at least 6’ deep, measured from the house out to the yard. Foliage really shouldn’t touch the house, so allowing for 1’ of empty space next to the house a 6’ bed will hold shrubs only 5’ around. It’s very important to check mature shrub sizes.
