That cool day or two was a blessing of sorts. More gorgeous blooms to see. My favorites are Chicago Girls and Sugar Magnolia. I find myself more attracted lately to the simple Beauties.

We too are enjoying much cooler temps but the heat will return once again. My favorite of these is Boundary Born. Color, form and pattern on the throat area stands out. They are all beautiful pics. Always a pleasure to see your photos.

Julia - I only got one cool day. Today's forecast calls for a high of 96 and back to the high 70s for nighttime temps. Boundary Born is a nice patterned cultivar - especially when temps are cool. It doesn't show that pattern when it's in the 90s.

Sherry - I like the simplicity of the UFs too! I fear my edged beauties won't open well in Indiana.

Debra, generally speaking I dont have trouble with my ruffled daylilies opening. I am guessing it won’t be a problem for you.

Cool hasn't come this far south yet nor do I expect it. The highest heat advisory I've seen is 107 but the day is young. It is a little less humid so it does feel a bit better.

I, too. like Chicago Girls and Sugar Magnolia. but Maney Augustine and Age of Aquarius are pretty too.

Boundary Born is a pretty one. Chicago Girls gave you a pretty bloom. Cardinal Desire is showing off that edge.

Your Cardinal Desire is really pretty. We grew it but the color was never as good as yours. I also like Wizard's Wish and Manny Augustine.

Cardinal Desire--is this Grossmann a keeper? A lot of those from this hybridizer have plant habit that leaves something to be desired. But I haven't tried many of the more recents. Chicago Girls should fit into your hybridizing goals; it is quite tall here.

Cardinal Desire is one of Grossman's first registrations. I've had this late for many years. It does OK, and before the Junebug fiasco three years ago, it had years of bud counts in the high teens. I do not plan to take it with me because it doesn't make my top 100. Would you be interested in getting it from me for postage? The only Grossman I'm taking is Serrated Sentinel which is an excellent plant in every way and one I can cross with my toothy purple seedlings.

Chicago Girls is supposed to set pods easily, which was why I added it. I'm getting rid of all my shorter Davissons, except Confessions of Hemaholic because it sets seed easily in 95 degree temps.

Nan - The color of my Cardinal Desire is usually more of a rosy red. But with the regular rain we got in June, it's actually cardinal red this time.

Our "cool" day is this Friday. High only 90, maybe 89- Whoopie........I like the pinks of course. Strawberry Alarm clock looks really nice and Manny Augustine is another pretty one.....I think it was you that had Shelby and Sugar Magnolia close together at one time - or maybe photographed together. Not my favorite form of course, but they were so pretty paired together.............Maryl

Maryl - We're back in the heat zone today with high at least 96. Shelby and Sugar Magnolia used to be planted next to each other. That area became too shady for them to bloom well. I moved Sugar Magnolia and TNT out of the shade zone a year ago. They are still recovering. Shelby had buds this year, but the deer got all but two. I do like Sugar Magnolia a lot. I never mananged to get a good clump shot of it this year. The lighting was always off. I do plan to take it to Indianapolis with me.

So you won't be taking Shelby? I think Sugar Magnolia is one of the prettier pinks I see posted by other people too and worth the move. Are you firm at 100 or does that depend on other factors?................Maryl

Maryl - I'm not firm on any number. The number of plants I take depends on a lot of factors: size and sun areas of my future yard, how hot it is in late July and August, how tired I am and if I am healthy. Frankly if it stays in the high 90s, I can't see digging more 25. I had a leg injury last weekend where I could barely walk for 48 hours. If something like that happened again, all bets are off. I know I want to take a lot of seedlings with me. The more of those I take, the fewer registered daylilies go. In a perfect word, I'd like to take a total of about 220 seedlings and registered daylilies combined. But things are rarely perfect. One thing I know: I will take very few, if any, diploids because I don't hybridize for those. As for diploid Shelby, I loved her curls but I didn't really like her color.

Call it a premonition, I thought this winter that this just might be my last big (for me) daylily season. Then the knee happened a few weeks ago and I saw it as a sure sign to start cutting way back..... So I understand completely about having to face limits and health. Which also is why I have to say no to your kind offer of Cherokee Star. My little seedling that was left after winter will have to make it or not.........When you finally have things settled as far as residency, it will be interesting to see which named varieties make the cut for you..................Maryl

Strawberry AC is looking good. I see that Boundary Born is a Salter evergreen. Staying in TN, I suspect.

Mantis - I'm trying to find a new home for both Boundary Born and Ghost Gifts, both evergreen Salters. They do very well here, but I doubt they will thrive in Indy. While I'm taking several patterned-eye seedlings, the only registered patterns I'm sure I will take are Stenciled Infusion and Yoga Man. Some Petit patterns may or may not make the cut.
