Its hard to say for sure by the picture, but, I would say not. The grouting looks like normal grouting and there is no way it could be white washed without that being done too. I have also seen brick a similar color to that many times, so I think, its probably original color.

What is a "a more traditional color"?

A shade of red is what I had in mind. Something like this.

I guess, you could sponge paint it that color, but, it will be a lot of work and take a bit of time. No paint should ever go on the grouting. It may not ever look like what you are wanting anyway, since red brick is shaded, and not solid colored, and it will most likely look like painted brick, when its finished.

A nice upgrade, instead of changing the brick, would be a new fireplace screen/glass. Or a new mantel; the existing mantel looks like a plain 2x6, painted.

It reminds me a lot of Cream City brick. I don't know if it is, unless you are in SE Wisconsin. It could be brick veneer too, that's being made in a Cream City style. The hearth is the same thing my folks used in the 70's when they built their house.

Do be aware that if you paint it, it can never be stripped back to original again. Brick is porous, and no amount of stripping gets it all out. You can paint it and re-do the grout, but it will not look like original red brick. It will look like painted brick.

If you changed the mantle to a chunky DARKER wood, that brick will look prettier. The mantle is not highlighting the lovely color of the brick. Work with it. A darker fireplace surround with dark accessories too.
