Kitchen update ideas

We are planning a light remodel in our kitchen and looking for design ideas. We are replacing the tops, backsplash, sink, fixture, lighting and cabinet hardware.

The island is 10’ long and there is a LONG run of cabinets/countertop space along the oven wall. Definitely think we should use a different top for the island to provide some contrast.

We’re mostly stuck on the countertops and backsplash, but appreciate ALL feedback!

Your choices were solid the first time around, I’m sure they will be this time. Do you have any inspiration images? They can help point you in the right direction. Other than wanting new surfaces, do you want more of something (perhaps color)? Less of something else (there’s a lot of millwork in there)? Is there an overall feeling you were hoping to give the space?

    Here is what I see:

Woods: Your floors and the finish of your island clash. The island (and barstools) is too red. Consider a blonde finish on the island. It will still have its traditional millwork (although it needn’t if you are tired of it) but it would have a fresher, updated feel to it.

Millwork: Are you feeling a little weighed down with all that molding? If you love it, keep it. If you don’t you can simplify the vent hood ledge/trim, for example.

Counter tops: Do you love that curve in your island counter top? If so, keep it. If not, square it up - you have room to overhang the family room side of the island for more seating if you want it, but the island is already pretty big.

Materials can be tricky. Marble slabs tend to max out around 10 feet. If you are used to granite you might prefer something tougher like a quartzite or even quartz. But basically you want to decide whether you want the counters to be the star and the backsplash to be the understudy (like you have now), or whether you want to do it the other way around this time.

Backsplash: I don’t have a lot of rules, but your backsplash should make you happy every time you see it. Again, whether it’s the star and brings in color is up to you. If it is a background element, choose a lovely shape. I don’t like the heavy look of stone tile with stone counters - I call it Stonehenge - I prefer ceramic tile, but that’s me. Start looking for images that you love.

Here is some eye candy from other traditional kitchens.

Wow, this is incredible guidance. Thank you! Will send over some inspiration pics. This is our summer home and we’ll probably downsize in the next five years, so probably won’t do a major overhaul here… just an update that we’ll love and will help with resale.
