That's interesting -- quite a striking view. There's certainly an occasional frost in central FL, but not often.

They are definitely hardier than listed. Can definitely survive a zone 9b rather than just 10a

I'm not sure they would actually survive long term in certain 9b parts of Florida, or even California. The occasional freeze down to "9a temperatures" would severely injure them. Someone like Sara M. the Sonoma County landscaper who no longer posts here would know for sure, but I recall only seeing them in the zone 10 parts of Northern California. Definitely not in even the 9b parts.

In places without severe freezes, they certainly are 'cool tolerant'. Here's an interesting historical picture from Hobart, Tasmania, which is zone 10a but pretty chilly in winter. I've posted the pic before but not the link to the original source.

For example, here is a report of many A. columnaris dying in Galveston, TX recently. Galveston is zone 9b.
