help remake this exterior

last modified: 2 years ago

Hi we are doing some remodeling and part of that is to redo the exterior colors. We live in a woods and would like a more rustic look that blends with the surroundings. Would love some suggestions! We don't want rustic farmhouse white and are leaning to the dark side. Hahhaaa

We would love to add shakes or board and batten but not sure how, or where, to utilize them properly.

Olive shades are one of the colors we have looked at. I am attaching inspiration pics.

This is our elevation.

Pictures of the existing colors? Existing house as it is now?

    Wood, vinyl, composite, Fibercement?

    Help us help you.

The last attachment is of the house after remodeling will be done. The current house does not look like the rendering.

When you finish come back so we can see the actual house . I will sya those shutters are a no go on those upper windows . I have no clue as to what thoe house is like now and what is being changed . Change just for the sake of change is often a bad idea. Your architect should be helping with the exterior choices and honestly I cannot even begin to guess from that elevation post Why shakes or B&B no real info here the pics you posted are nothing like the rendering so what are you trying to show with those .

Are you designing this yourselves? The transition at both sides of the porch roof will be problematic, and the gable end of the garage is a bit wonky and unbuildable currently.

Millworkman, we are honestly open at this point to products. This will be DIY installation and we have done Vinyl, Board and batten and composite but haven't done Fibercement.

We definitely want some wood elements either on porch or as accents.

I will try to find some current house pics. It is basically a baby blue box.

Patricia the pics are just inspiration pics as I said in the post. No architect on this one. The house now is the main box in the middle with the porch. Coming back after would leave the house with out anything but house wrap for too long. We would like to make the decision before the work is done.

Hallet - sorry the renderings are some I did so I can play around with colors. The Garage will not have the wonky ends.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate the feedback. My main goal was to get color ideas. I will try to find someone more local who can guide us. We have a long process ahead as we may need to do this in stages. Our hope was to start getting our ducks in a row before the build begins which may not be until next Spring.

Is the second floor an addition, or is the part on the far right an addition? The shape of your remodeled house is not like the inspiration pics. There certainly wouldn't be anything wrong with using dark olive colored siding on it, but I don't see any opportunity for different types of siding without making the exterior look too busy.

I'm sorry to say this because I'm sure a lot of work has gone into this. But there are too many styles fighting each other in this design. None of it says rustic to me if that was your intention. I don't know whether it's a colonial trying to look like a ranch, or a ranch trying to look like a colonial. The windows look Farmhouse. What color are they going to be? Hopefully the interior is the way you want it, but you need an architect to tweak the exterior. Sometimes we can't put all of our good ideas into one house.

Kandrewspa - thank you, I really appreciate you pointing out specifically what we are struggling with. I think that is why it has been so hard to come up with an exterior plan. We will go beyond the builder we are working with and hopefully add a local design professional who can help steer us on the makeover.

Truly thank you all. This journey is not for the faint of heart.

    Blessings!

A picture of your existing house would help a lot. The elevation you posted looks like two oversized additions tacked on to a regular house.
