FFE seedlings 2024

I had 11 first-time blooming seedlings this year. Could have been more but some got the sickness. All of these but one are those that took 3 to 4 years to bloom. And I should note that last year's crop was prettier ;) Anyway..

#1

seedling (medium purple with darker eye) x Born to Reign

good size and height, opens well, did not get an edge from either parent

#2

sdlg (dark red with watermark) x Kingdom Without End

Good size, height, opens well. I like that cross, the siblings are all nice.

#3

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis x Raspberries in Cream

not what I wanted, yes nice soft colors and tall but the flower is small

#4

from crossing siblings which are dusty rose pink with watermark

flower on the small side like parents, color is clear but I have lots like this already

#5

Bombay Silk x late dark red sdlg

too light of a red considering parents, I was hoping for a nice red, slow to open and when not hot only to a tulip form (like Bombay Silk but somehow BS is pretty even when not fully open), and small size, good height and scape though

#6

seedling which was out of Heartbeat of Heaven (just lavender self) X Heartbeat of Heaven

Pretty colors and edge, but not a big bloom.. good height and instant rebloom (just a few buds)

#7

seedling (another one of those dusty rose pinks with watermark) X All Things To All Men

I couldn't form an opinion on this one. good size and height and actually scaped as supposed, in second year. I have way too many lavenders from ATTAM (All things to all men), not my favorite color most of the time

#8

((Chance Encounter x Red Friday #1) X Heartbeat of Heaven) #2 X All Things To All Men

tall but small..

#9

seedling (light peach with faint eye) x ATTAM

good size, form and height and the best scape, but just like another cross of that light peach with a good scape - the color is neither here nor there. Just so hard to get a nice light pink! Purples, lavenders here you go, but whites and light pinks are elusive so far

#10

((Chance Encounter x Red Friday #1) X Heartbeat of Heaven)) #1 X All Things To All Men

Pod parent is (was) my favorite seedling, I even gave it a name last year.

Good size and height and the edge looks quite white

#11

seedling (big rose pink with a watermark) x ATTAM

can't figure this out either, what on earth is that color. It looks like Red Friday without its edge, which is actually one of the parents of the Pod seedling. Pleats in the beginning

I also had a registered FFE. I bought a few new daylilies last year. I thought I was getting better last spring, but nope.. To do that I had to move out several of my old ones sadly. Nothing wrong with them, but I thought maybe some new ones would cheer me up. Here is one of them that bloomed this year for the first time

I'm So Excited (i was!)

Thanks for looking!

Looks like you are having fun!

I like #3 even if it is small. I like a taller scape and a smaller bloom if it is really well budded, Coyote Moon is that for me.

i like #6 too, nice water mark and edge…like the green throat with the lavender.

I like the last bloom too, very striking.

Lots of these are so pretty. My choices are, in order of favorite, 6, love the color and form. Prefer larger flowers though. 10. 4. 7, & 2 are also quite pretty and colors and forms I enjoy. I hope these work out for you, Nat.

I think you've done well on your seedlings. Some of them look as nice as what I've seen in other hybridizers catalogs. Number 9 reminds me a bit of Sweetest Name I Know, which is in the lavender pink range of colors, but it's one of my favorites. Number 10 is another one I like with a clearer color and nice throat.....It is sad when you have to let older ones go to make room for new, but the fun of seeing a new one bloom is sometimes just too tantalizing.......Maryl

This is a pretty group. On looks alone, #2 and 6 would be my favorites. I find all the ones with watermarks appealing.

Thank you very much everyone for your kind words.

I am going to keep most of these since they are still small and do not take much room.

Thanks Sherry, I know some people think 5 inches is small, it is fine with me but smaller than that not really. As for bud count, it goes significantly down in my yard when plants mature, 8-12 is the average, but when it is 20 scapes it makes for a nice looking clump.

Thanks Brad, I really like the colors of sdlg #6 too but wish it were bigger, because I too prefer larger flowers.

Thanks Kay, I do really like watermarks and large centers.

Thanks Maryl, #9 has such a nice scape, 23 buds, and form, I would like to make the color clearer but don't know how and no room. Yes, very sad to let go of daylilies because I do like every single one I have, but I will have to again this year because I can not give them the care they need anymore..

Thanks Debra, watermarks are still my favorite, I would love to get a bright red with a very light watermark :)

Thanks Kate, oh So very hard to give up. And yes some of my older ones were also given to me, still can't look at their pictures without some regret :))

I know I commented on this, but probably forgot to hit the "submit." Heartbeat of Heaven seems to have been a good parent for you. It will be interesting to see if the excitment continues for So Excited. Needs to thrive for three years or so to determine hardiness.

Thanks, Mantis! Yeah, I know, re I'm So Excited. Been thinking about finally adding something out of RFK for years, and it was the only choice at the place I buy and price I could afford :)
