They will pop right out with an angle grinder. I can’t imagine what they are for but they aren’t structural.

Actual purpose is more of a curiosity as I've never seen that before, but as long as they're not holding up walls or something that info is secondary.

Maybe misplaced hinge nails prior to standing up the framing? Or properly placed but the wall ended up in the wrong spot and had to be nudged over?

Given that these nails are evenly spaced out on all four sides, I think they were originally put in to hold up the drywall but were never taken out for whatever reason. So long as that reason is not structural (confirmed above) we're good to go in removal.
