And for those saying paint wall color, do you paint underside of soffits as well?

I have seen them done both ways. Seem some like the ceiling color. When I had soffits, they were always painted the color of the wall, undersides too.

Why are they so deep in some places, and flush with the cabinets in other places?

Plumping from upstairs bathroom above sink. We were able to move them up about 3 inches which I was excited about. Air ducts above fridge.

This is sort of what they would look like painted. I tried to account for the fact that the wall color is illuminated in some places and not illuminated in others.

I would keep them ceiling color.

Personally I don't like the horizontal / vertical rule, When they are overhanging like this it creates a striped racetrack around the ceiling especially when the colors contrast.

If there is a soffit I usually have them painted either one or the other depending upon their placement. Either wall color on every surface or ceiling color on every surface.

Feel like I should have chosen a lighter paint color.. another learning lesson during this process ☺️

Will it look “unfinished “ ? Of course current pictures are with primer only so could mute things with a softer paint?

Oh my gosh I think you did a great job. It’s such a unique space filled with beautiful neutrals. It’s about as far away as you can get from the too-often-chosen white kitchen. I love your paint choice and your cabinet choice. The only thing left to do is congratulate yourself for creating such a beautiful space.

Primer or paint, this is pretty much what the soffits are going to look like if you paint them ceiling color. I notice the soffits more because they are white and they contrast with the cabinet wood. I barely see them in the painted mock-up. Try the wall color and see what you think. You can always change your mind.

Pal is an architect, I am not, but I want the horizontal surfaces to be white because they will bounce that window light all over the space. If they are wall color they will reflect less light and your space may feel darker.

Whatever you choose, it’s going to be beautiful.

Yes, since there is a significant horizontal above the window and door, and the wall color is deeper, that's why I would keep it all ceiling color.

What an attractive kitchen. I like the soffit painted the wall color. It gives the illusion of taller cabinets. I love the cabinet color, and the wall color. A tasteful kitchen without copying what everyone else is doing! Great job!

Yeah, I was going to say change the wall color! I would not paint the soffits the dark taupe.

I also have soffits that change size. I was excited just to have them be rebuilt to level, lol.

I vote for wall color on both horiz and vertical sides. Dark color recedes, light comes forward. I'd want those suckers to recede, not come forward! Also you have so little of the wall color and it is a pretty color that goes nicely with the wood and the floors and continuing it above the cabinets frames and emphasizes them, so you see the cabinet more than a big looming white thing hanging overhead. I think EAM's pics show this very clearly, how the soffits are de-emphasized and blend into the walls more. Any loss of reflective light is minimal - as you still have large expanse of ceiling and there are task lights a bove the counters.
