What to do about wobbly plants?

I have several African violets that are poorly supported at the base. If I pick up a pot the whole plant wobbles, and I'm afraid that if I tip it too far from horizontal, whole thing will just snap off.

If it were another plant I'd build up the soil level to give the lower part of the plant more support. But I've read that African violets are particularly susceptible to crown rot, so I'm afraid to do this. What can I do?

This is not a problem with watering or light. I have almost a dozen plants, and I treat them all the same, but only a few have this problem. A difference in the soil, maybe.
