We had a very wet spring. Since June it had been very dry till mid July. Then non-stop rain over a week. I think that is a hard test for a lot of roses

Perfectly (almost) clean: Summer romance, Gertrude Jekyll (big surprise), Purple Prince, Desdemona, Pomponella, Earth Angel, raspberry cupcake, Bolero, Golden Opportunity, Beverly

Mostly OK: PcdM, Love Song, own-root Fun in the Sun (I rooted as a back up for fear of voles in the winter, and might replace the original), Ebb Tide, top cream, pop arts, queen of Sweden

BS quite bad but bloom away: Julia Child, raspberry cream twirl, lady in red, lady of shallot, Graham Thomas

BS bad and some might be removed: Fun in the Sun ( grafted), lavender crush, Evelyn, fire fighters

My worst BS offenders this summer (to my surprise) are Neil Diamond and Perfume Factory--both of which have completely defoliated. PF seems to keep blooming but every new leaf is covered in BS. ND is almost completely denuded now and has not bloomed in two months. I might need to remove ND and PF because it's so bad (I don't spray).

The best performers are Life of the Party, Bolero, Quest for Zest, Florentina, Wollerton Old Hall, Easy Living, and Fragrant Cloud.

And shock of all shocks, Eden has been blooming all summer this year. I usually get a smattering of blooms, but it has been dozens and dozens this year!

Randomly, my Double Delight died in about two weeks while all the other roses around it look terrific. Couldn't find any root damage, but the stems and leaves turned completely crispy rapidly. Bizarre.

Never black spot here, but we're heading for 108F today. I think I'd prefer black spot. Diane

I have been spraying every 2 weeks and had removed BS magnets from my garden . So my roses are mostly clean . But since it rains daily in FL in summer , all blooms are balling and a dirty brown color and they stay on the bushes unfortunately . Dead heading those ugly blooms is a pain .

I don't spray anything but water and the occasional insecticidal soap, so I have of necessity developed a high tolerance for blackspot. If a rose only loses leaves on its lower 6" or so and keeps its upper leaves, I don't consider that particularly meaningful blackspot for me, just shedding older leaves.

We've had a very moist spring and early summer so I would expect BS pressure to be high, but most of my roses have been relatively clean. I plant a lot of shrub roses and Kordes and Easy Elegance roses that have good resistance to BS, so for the most part they look reasonably clean across the board. Even the Canadians like Alexander Mackenzie or John Cabot that usually lose about 50% of their leaves midsummer look pretty good. Since they're only a year old, that bodes well as they adjust to my climate in the next few years.

The ones that stand out in memory as being mostly defoliated in our 98F temperatures and 90% humidity these days would be Lavender Lassie, Jacqueline du Pre (Prospero is VERY not surprised about that one), and to my surprise Sweet Pegge from Antique Rose Emporium. Usually the Shoup roses do pretty well for me but several of them are defoliating 50% or more, like some Buck roses. They're hardy for us but take a toll in the summer.

It's been very rainy and humid here in the NC Piedmont, and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. Despite this my roses are looking great.

Minor BS but otherwise the plant is healthy and generally does not drop its leaves:

    Lady of Shalott

    Roald Dahl

    Queen of Sweden

    Earth Angel

    Above and Beyond

    Evelyn

    No visible BS:

    Brother Cadfael

    Boscobel

    Princess Anne

    Windermere

    Louise Clements

    Desdemona

@nippstress - zone 5 Nebraska, I noticed the Sweet Pegge at the US Botanical Garden in DC had significant black spot. Beautiful blooms though!

We had a wet sprimg and then a hot and dry July which triggered what yhey termed a ”flash drought.” Now we are in a more typical pattern of hot and humid with frequent late day thunderstorms with not much accumulation. Things look pretty rough both here and at the US Botanic Garden near my office in DC.

I don’t spray, so not much stays truly clean. The ones that stay looking good are noteworthy. These include South Africa, Lafter, Easy on the Eyes, Flamenco Rosita, The Faun, Darlow’s Enigma, and Perle d’Or

Polar Express is a tough rose and close to clean. It and South Africa are the most resistant. even Earth Angel and Lion’s Rose are spotty though I know they’ll be fine. Laguna just has some liqer leaves effected, but looks good.

    Polar Express

First Crush is looking suprisingly good, but hasn’t rebloomed.

Olivia is the best of my Austins. Teasing Georgia and Lady of Shalott are tied for worst.

Cornelia is pretty good with a few leaves I should pick off.

Yellow Submarine is starting to lose lower leaves but looks pretty good overall.

All of my Jalberts have some degree of Blackspot. They are mostly new and some are still in pots. William PJ McCarthy and Tanglebank Legacy look the best. Dylan looks the worst and is looking pretty bare.

Another disappointing new rose is Reminiscent Coral. It has a lot of black spot.

Diane, my relatives live mostly in the Nampa family. I remember visiting them during the sunmer and how walking outside was like stepping into an oven! just merciless heat, but it would cool off enough that they’d turn off the AC and ooen the windows at night. They say they can’t do that anymore. It doesn’t cool off enough. Here it’s like a steam bath. 89 percent humidity this morning. The fungi love that.

    Markay,

OT question, but how tall does your South Africa get? Is it as vertical as Memorial Day in growth habit? Mine are making much growth, but not the height I had expected. Their vigorous, substantial canes are coming out more at 45° angles from the vertical. Thank you!

My absolutely most black spot free rose is Bliss. It's cast iron.

    last modified: 2 years ago

Moses, I forgot about Bliss. that’s a good one here too. South Africa is only about 3ft right now because it is a newer bush, but it is on multiflora so I expect it will get at least as tall of my Poseidon and Savannah. they are each at least 7ft tall. Mine looks to be aspiring to vertical heights with that central cane.

No blooms right now because it just finished a flush.

    Markay,

Many thanks for the photo. My older bush, still young, is sending out canes just about like yours are. I will have to dead head mine to buds pointing toward the center of the bush to keep it within the space provided for it. What a great rose it is. All things about it say A+ grade. Thanks again for posting the photo. It's the first bush shot that I've seen of it on the web although I searched high and low for one.

    Markay,

Sorry for being inquisitive, hopefully I am not annoyingly so! Is that an apple tree behind your South Africa? Whatever it is it looks robust!

    Moses

It is an apple tree! Good eye!

    Markay,

Besides roses I am an apple lover, no connoisseur, just a fan, food and tree alike. I tried to train a semi-dwarf Golden Delicious into a weeping form...too robust, fought me until I gave up and had to take it out of the spot where I planted it. Sad ending for a tree that out did me.

    Is it Honey Crisp?

We have 2 heirloom variety apple trees that are my husbands’s darlings. One Sierra Beauty. I’m not sure about the other one. He bought them from Trees of Antiquity about 5 years ago undetered by my No-spray mandate or the giant red cedar in our front yard.

They’ve grown well and they make him happy, but it unlucky they eill ever produce an apple that either of us would like to eat. We consider them offerings to the critters.

My At Last rose was a stand alone rose... Eyesore in its 3rd year so its gone!

I didn’t mention Sonnenwelt because it is new this season and is in a pot for now, but it looks very promising so far.

I'm not far from you (7B, South Jersey). Tess of the D'Urbervilles was doing great until a couple of weeks ago, but it's manageable. Oddly, zephirine drouhin has been very clean (but stingy with blooms) and yet "Easy Does It" blackspots so much for me! It probably needs more sun. I said goodbye to Golden Celebration because I could never keep it clean. Belinda's Dream has been okay--manageable blackspot. I recently planted Plum Perfect, Summer Romance, and a bunch of Bordeauxs and so far no BS (knock on wood). Florentina has been excellent, with only a few leaves here and there.

M K, I saw Summer Romance at the US Botanical garden in DC recently and was impressed by how clean it looked especially when there was blackspot on the Knock Outs.

Markay, it has really pretty foliage, too (at least so far). Got my first bloom and it's lovely. Fingers crossed it does well in its spot. I also planted Flamenco Rosita just a couple of weeks ago, and it's taking off with clean foliage so far (and a bud)!

M K your mileage may vary, but Plum Perfect lost about 75% of it’s foliage here in it’s 2nd summer.

Markay, I'm really worried about that. Oh well, if it gets bad, it's in a good place for a climber, so maybe I'll try something else.

we’re in to September now, but I had to pop back into this thread to say that Easy on the Eyes is amazing it id planted in a rough spot within my pollinator border where I haven’t provided very regular supplemental water. This is its second year and it is easily my cleanest rose right now. I love it!

MarkayMarket, your Easy On the Eyes is great. My friend has one but it is not vigorous and blooms poorly.

In my September garden, most of Kordes are still doing good health wise. Raspberry Cupcake is really a star now. Blooms become bigger

Pcdm is clean all summer with a couple blooms each week

Lady of Shallot was really bad earlier with BS and lost 2/3 of her leaves. Now they grow back and it looks as good as spring with continuos blooms though not many

Lady of Red blooms the most though with BS badly

Markay - oh, I'm so happy that Easy on the Eyes is so beautiful!!! Mine (new rose) is starting to bud up again (way more than its first blooms) and I'm excited to see how they look this time. Is yours fragrant? Mine is healthy too.

Forever - my PCdM is clean too. Mine is a new rose. I'm really happy with it.

Wow Jim! That’s a fabulous fall flush!

    Jim,

My True Sincerity made a wild vertical cane like yours, too. Buds only on it just yet. They may not get to blooming size if cold sets in. Like yours, mine is a robust bush. No rose slugs here 'cause I spray for rose midge fly which covers other insects at the same time. Last sprays of the season coming up....maybe into November if it stays warm.

If your True Sincerity continues on the course it's on it will be quite a centerpiece bush in no time.

Are you pleased with the flower itself? i don't usually like blooms that go pinkish as they age, but True Sincerity has such good traits otherwise so far, I can live with 'PINKING' very easily. Seems the blooms are pretty long lasting on the bush and do not nod nor fry in the sun and heat.

I like True Sincerity blooms Moses.... I enjoy all the different colors on every bloom its like having 4 roses bushes in one...lol..Pinking doesn't bother me since it has other cool colors also...

Hopefully it stays fairly healthy...Time will tell...

Moses, so far these 3 doing well... True Sincerity, Double Easy Orange, Double Red (Oso) Potted Earthsong is a mess right now Moses! That may go next season....It just does not have the diisease resistance or vigor that my other Earthsong at my old house had...

    Jim,

How nice everything looks. It's always satisfying to find a rose that grows the way you thought it would at purchase time. I hope the new ones there in the photo do winter good, and come out in spring guns blazing (politically correct?).

Do you intend to keep trying with that Earthsong, or try it from another source, or let you Earthsong quest take a back seat for now?

    Moses

Leaning toward just getting rid of it Moses! I will overwinter it in my garage then decide next year..Not going lose sleep over it...

Hopely all your new roses do well Moses...

    Thank you Markay!

My True Sincerity today. Rvery bloom is unique!

    Jim,

I just now, again, looked at your photo of the three circle, centerpiece roses there in your garden, and the word 'SERENE' came into my mind. Then I remembered one of the roses there is True Serenity. Gee! It was the soothing to the soul setting (the roses, aged stone wall, weathered wooden fence and gate, simple beauty.....), that prompted me to think serene, not the rose's name. What a fortuitous synchrony!

    Moses

They were all almost defoliated but then again, I only sprayed in the spring. I could do a better job spraying but I don't. I'll take that any day over RRD.

I had a symptom on Plum Perfect and out it went.

Wow Markay that True Sincerity bloom is quite different...:-) We got a frost last night I hate to see the season end...
