Clematis love a deeply prepared free root run, if the soil isn't so great it can cause the plant to show stress, also could be weather related, but whatever the cause, wouldn't hurt to give your plant a bit of feeding come early next spring if you don't already do so. Also, a few varieties just tend to brown out at the bottom, it's in their genetics.
