Keep in mind that you're inviting some design pros and people with a design eye into your home via photos. If they walked into your actual space, they would take in all of it: all four sides, doorways, floors, windows, ceiling, built-in fixtures, lighting, trim--the "givens"--then the features that can be changed--furnishings, paint, art, rugs, decor items, etc. It's all one first impression. Same thing with photos. That's why it's important to provide well lit photos of the entire space, taken from all sides of a room regardless of the size of your problem.Plea

I think what you have done is switch spaces so now you have a FP in the DR and a hutch in the LR so I need to understand why the switch and I need a floor plan to undestand the layout.

"Word art" is out. Get a piece of art about the size of the Fire Box. Then post a picture here as a comment. A piece you love not anything matchy-matchy.

Could certainly use a bit of color...

Yes to one or two (max) large art works you love above the firebox, which should be kept full with logs, an interesting light, or large lanterns! A large art work, or two will give you more visual pleasure than monkeying around with the tiles, which look fine. The small pieces you have on mantel don't have the impact to pull the eye upward from the surround.

jck showed some lovely art works. They all have a touch of the tan but introduce color and pattern into the room, which you can echo with pillors and favorite objects.

You’ll be amazed how much of a difference just painting the surround will make.

The mantle needs updating and there is lots of on line help, as weight/balance is so important. Whatever you add, tie into room.

Accessorize piano and even add some family photos.

Cushions are a great way to pull a room together, as well accessorizing coffee table.

On another topic and if interested, I find the layout and so many side tables makes the room feel crowded. Not sure if either of these will work, but no harm trying.

I frequently like trim painted same color as the walls. To be honest I haven’t completely thought thru the 2 wall colors effect but if you don’t wanna do that how about painting all the trim the same creamy color as the FP wall. The cooler white trim seems contrasty with the wall colors.

I love the painting in the context of the fireplace wall. It works beautifully with the sand tones of that wall, fireplace tile, and carpet. What makes things complicated is darker wall paint on your window wall, which on my monitor has olive-green tones. And your gray ottoman and pillows, which are fighting with the dark warm-toned wall. Is it possible to repaint that dark wall the lighter color of the fireplace wall? Then add a few blue cushions as Maureen suggested. And a nice throw blanket.

No to painting the stuff around the dark wall IMO and the art while okay is not waht I would choose to add color to your space.. I actully don't like that dark wall with all the heavy black furniture which IMO is just too heavy looking for the space .

I would paint all the walls the same as the fireplace wall. I would leave all the molding white. You picture is pretty. It has more of light feel. I would frame the new art in black. Get some pillow covers from Amazon in blue. I would just bring some blue into the room.

I don't know what the rest of your house looks like, but if you are really up for some change you could paint the walls blue. I would leave the molding the white color.
