Space Plan for Large Great Room

Hoping for some ideas to help space plan this large great room. It is 23 feet by 18 feet. Two stories. One side is open to kitchen with a large island that is 17 feet long. One wall has two windows and a gas fireplace and mantle in between. One wall is all windows plus French Doors that open into the room and lead to the deck. The other wall is a blank canvas. Would like to have conversation seating that works for entertaining but also just enjoying the home with our family. Would like to put a tv somewhere and are wired to do that both over the mantle and on the blank wall. Would also like to work in our upright piano, if possible. Having trouble configuring sofas and then also considering coffee tables, chairs, end tables, etc. such a big space yet I cannot figure out how to plan it so we can use it well and be able to talk to each other without shouting across this big room. Ideas and/or suggestions for resources would be really welcome and appreciated.

I’d suggest two areas. One catering to TV (placed on fireplace), family time and socializing. Given the doors to outside, the format below might be a good layout and chairs can be decided later if flow to outside is not an issue. (Imagine below but with windows on other side of room.)

Maybe 8 feet or so is all you’d need for piano placed on the remaining wall and then add some chairs by window to read or chat with people in kitchen. Versus below, your window and the chairs would be opposite the piano. Chairs could match the other ones, to connect the two areas.

Thank you! I was thinking that creating “areas” was the answer, but was wondering how to do that without cutting the room in two (or more) with giant pieces of furniture. This seems to keep the openness. Thanks!

For better flow, I would urge you to get two sofas, NOT a sectional. Especially if you are creating two areas in this space. A sectional will act as a barrier, I think. A method for creating “areas” to incorporate two rugs that complement each other but are not identical. Do post a measured floor plan of the space, from the kitchen outward. You will get specific suggestions for furniture placement from the PROs here!

I like the idea of putting two sofas back to back, with one facing the fireplace and the other facing the kitchen.

P.S. If you do that last idea with a table in between the sofas, make sure you bring in an electrician to put outlets in the floor so you don't have lamp cords going across the floor to the wall.

MY LR is 25 x15 so bit differnt but we have 2 seating areas but in the middle we have a long bench where the people can sit on either side for conversation and so the 2 sides work together We have 2 sofas 4 chairs and the bench I like to change the layout often and it works for us . We do not have TV in the space but a huge FP so sometimes the bench is in front of it. The pieces allowa lot of variety for seating and I think the same could be a bonus for you . Christmas of course requires a tree so againn the pieces get rearranged. The corner windows gets the tree and all things shift to make room. Think outside the box when you have such a nice space to really enjoy having guests .

If you want to include both spaces in this living area, then it looks like you'll want to float a sectional, or couch, facing the fireplace with a TV over it. Then behind the sectional you could do a sofa table and then have a small sitting area with the piano. Below are some ideas that could work in your space.
