Yes, September already……things are looking bad in my garden except my perennials. They are still going. I’m doing fine, but I have Bert digging up a front bed where the plants are getting choked by roots. I will go out in a few to pull the roots out of the plant roots….Oh joy. 🙄

I’m emptying pots of spent flowers and still watering tomatoes, peppers and basil. I am doing some hemming and mending so my sewing machine is on a table behind the living room couch. It’s really the best place to sew. I don’t have room for it to stay set up in any of the bedrooms.

I have got to get planting the hostas in pots that I think will do fine in the ground during winter to cut down on how many I have to overwinter. Some should go in the bed Bert is working on.

My potted annuals should look better than they do……I tend to lose interest around this time of the year. Today I did plant a bare root daylily I got on line, hoping for blooms from it next season. Most of my hostas still look good, cant figure that out cause it is so dry…..wish you could share that rain. One good thing here, insect pests have not been s problem here for years……..probably shouldnt have put that in writing.

Yes, sherry….that phrase was the kiss of death! lolo We are so dry here….. no significant rain for weeks! We had so much rain in May and June but little since. I am back to watering again, at least every 7-10 (for hostas) but more for some of the perennials like my anemones.

NHL, I feel the same about my garden this year. I can deal with slugs by drenching, but the cutworms and especially the earwigs were awful this year. Never had that before…..

Debra, I hope i didn't curse myself with that statement. My fall cleanup is easy. The only thing I remove is the flower scapes on my hosta and daylilies, I leave the foliage. I kept reading the dying leaf material encourages those little critters, hasnt happened here after a decade….. maybe I have been lucky??? Didnt see any japanese beetles this season.

Paula that is a lot of rain for one day and ditch digging is a fun job, not. At least if you see the water draining away it is satisfying.

Debra thank goodness you have Bert to do the heavy work. It is a big job getting plants out of root infested soil. Hopefully you got the plants free of roots and replanted as well as some that were in pots.

nhl I have been getting quite a bit of rain too. It is raining right now and there is more coming for a couple of days. I hope your neighbour gets on their drainage issue immediately. I seems like it has been going on for a while and that is not okay. I am sure P of S will be happy to be freed from its restraint and will flourish. Hopefully you will find a solution to your over crowding. I am dealing with that too. Full is good buried is not lol!

Sherry I wish I could share the rain with you (& Debra). May you continue to be pest free! Hosta are so resilient, I had three years of drought until this year and they looked great. Here's to your new Daylily blooming next year! Which one did you get? I'm sure it is something fabulous.

It is a chilly day today and will be tomorrow too, 13 & 14C that is about 58-59F plus it is raining. Shocking after the super hot summer. It will warm up again but brrr. I have been digging for weeks redoing beds. I had to move Lemon frost because 3/4 of it was buried under Silver Bay. The most major event was cutting down an ancient apple tree. It was a really hard decision. It had been slowly dying but three years ago the gypsy moth hit here and denuded it completely. It could not recover as much as I wanted it to. Sad day but over the winter I will burn out the stump and put in a new apple tree. No matter how large the new one is it will look tiny.

Even some of the dead branches were providing a bit of shade so I can see more plants having to move.

Laurie, removing that tree was a momentus task after seeing the stump. Moving plants is hard work, did alot of that the past several weeks here. Hope you get all of those garden chores done soon injury and pain free. My new daylily is Stargate Angel Wings.

I guess I switched with most of you, my rain level went to nothing for most of August, I got 10 minutes sprinkle the other day and am watering too.

I will have to redo couple of beds completely due to my own seedlings which I am not willing to loose thus need to be given premium property space. But need to wait for cooler and rainier weather.

Some hostas lost nearly 50 % of foliage since draught started. It feels like ground level was so high most of the summer they expanded over what roots could support and now with no rain my measly watering is not enough. I feel like I can water an hour in one spot and not make a difference.

So will be concentrating on power washing my siding, decks, repairing and staining as there is no rain in the forecast.

I got lucky and and bought sport of Emperor, Frog in my throat.

Chipmunks have destroyed several of my hostas and started eating my seed heads. I bought traps, hoping they will work. So I cut stems that were ready anyway and will keep them in sugary water for next couple of weeks.

Lindalana, the traps have worked here. I hate to trap but the last batch we trapped were digging around fence posts weaking the gate and a section of the fence. Property damage wasnt going to happen.

Sherry, me to. I am mostly live and let live person, considering we are in the woods. But they damaging my hybridizing efforts and property is too large to put bird netting over everything.

NHL, slugs and and snails sudden abundance might relate to soil deficiency. This is what I had last year when my garden was overrun by them. It is better this year after I adjusted for phosphorus. Actually even sprinkling super phosphate in the area of their movement helps. Slug baites are iron phosphate after all.

this week was less gardening more time online ugh..I had problems with the gardenweb update..it‘s probably my fault..I have trouble with this site..I think I’m ok now..

GW/Houzz has changed a bit since I was last here. I had to sign in for the first time in I don't know how long!

I’m finally getting some time to garden again. My cat Molly is home from her thyroid treatment. They kept her nine days/eight nights, which was a terribly long time. And she came home with something respiratory (which they didn’t even notice!) so that meant another trip to my local vet. Stress was the diagnosis. She’s better but still not 100% back to her normal, happy self yet. Not the best experience so far.

Guests are gone. One was not happy to go home to regular life. I couldn’t relate. My favorite place to be in the whole wide world is my home and gardens!

I’ve moved four hostas that aren’t thriving to places I hope they will be happier in. Lots of weeds that need pulled. And thirteen plants in pots that I’ve held over for cooler weather are on the list of things to get done.

I can’t imagine getting as much rain as some of you have had! That doesn’t seem real to me.

For others experiencing drought, that is all too real, and it’s terrible! I have several hostas that shrank and are slowly coming back. I hope your drought conditions ease up soon!

I don't know what kind of hydrangea this is, but it's competing with the other shrubs and holding its own.

I thought I'd show how this sedum grew once in the ground. I thought it looked so different and special when I saw it at the nursery.

This is what it looks like now. Still cute but pretty ordinary.

Hosta Wu-La-La planted last fall has put on some good growth.

Isn’t that a mophead hydrangea of some sort? I thought they had those lacy cap flowers……🤔

debra, here's a closeup of the flowers. They look more of a lacecap to me. I got it years ago and it was labeled Hydrangea tree because it was made into a tree form. It blooms every year on new wood. That's all I know. :-)
