It is Rose Rosette and you took really good pictures for others to learn from. The prickles are so different, and look at the thick stems emerging from thinner stems. The colors of foliage (that reddish color that persists). How close the internodal distances are (this is where the rosette in the (now) virus name comes from.

IF this gallica has put out runners to make a bigger plant, you may be able to cut them off and plant them elsewhere to have a healthy plant. The virus doesn't move through runner in gallicas always. I've seen several saved. Most of your main plant is infected, but there might be runners that are healthy. Worth a try.

Thanks so much Ann & Jeri. I will look for any runners and see if they look okay. Hoping it doesn’t spread. Such a lovely rose and it was really doing well! No neighbors have roses, does the mite live on other plants too?

Bummer , especially that it happened to a hard-to-get variety. I believe the disease is rose specific, but the mite can travel up to low lying clouds and survive, so it can travel quite a distance.

Yes, Ben. Mites hitch a ride on 'Elephants.'. No I am not going nuts. I have read that the average cloud weighs as much as 4 bull elephants. So, by stretching the facts a little, clouds are carrying mites, yes, and imaginary elephants are the form clouds can be seen in as they go through their gyrations!
