Making a dining nook and seating in awkward greatroom with wood stove

last modified: 2 years ago

We currently eat at the island and fit 2 more stools when we have company. I'd love a small dining area, but the entry from our mudroom is on one side of the kitchen/ greatroom and an entry into a hallway on the other side. Do you recommend:

1) A small, possibly L-shaped dinette where the tall table with lamp and wall art are? or

2) A small round or rectangular table by the window, possibly with a bench seat?

I'm open and grateful for any thoughts / suggestions!

(Additional info: Around the corner, behind the fish tank is a TV den with a sectional. The boyfriend would like a swivel armchair by the wood stove, so I'm thinking 2 of them instead of our current seating - open to your thoughts though! We'd just keep the massage chair by the door, and can change the rug.)

How often do you have guests over and want to have seating for dinner? Would you end up using and enjoying a table in this space even when you do not have guests over? How often do you use the current massage chair, and other seating in this room?

    A. Remove all seating but the massage chair. Place it in the corner by the first tank. Now you have room for a nice sized table in the middle of this room.

    B. Get rid of the sofa. Get a drop leaf table that you store by the window and bring it out when you have guests over. However, you have to consider where you will stash four chairs to place around the table.

Kendrah - The massage chair is used daily. We use the other chairs too but they are old and need replacement anyhow. Company is over monthly but I love the idea of sitting down at a little table even just to have breakfast together. We could certainly move the massage chair as you suggest. I also like the drop leaf table idea. We could put a bench by the window and 1 leaf up with 2 small chairs slid under perhaps?

ShadyWillowFarm - working on the floor plan now. Yes, we wouldn't use a dining area often enough to dedicate a full room to it, but would love a little nook.

Make your den a dining area/library.

We have a similar layout. we finally committed the room adjacent to the kitchen, which also has a wood stove, to be a dining room.

We lived with a small drop leaf for years and finally decided we wanted a real dining room. So we bought a tiny loveseat and chair for the fireplace area and a dining table for the open area.

Put the table in the area off the island and put two chairs for just the two of yo by the wood stove. You get cosy fireplace seating, a real dining room, and a real living room in your den.

I have a drop leaf table pushed against the wall if we want to seat more when we have company.

I also have a heavy duty folding table that seats six stored away, and two card tables. So I can seat up to 10 by juggling things around but on a daily basis there is only comfortable seating for two. We don't have an eat in kitchen, peninsula or island. If you only need it occasionally you may not want to dedicate a lot of room to something permanent. We will be cramming in 18 sometime later this year. I will see how that goes.

None of us will count the squares so every measurement needs to be shown . I assume you use the den for TV watching but the fish tank is definately skewing the LR space . IMO the massage chair is huge and why not put that in the den. Get a smaller scaled sof 3 seats and on chair and a coffee table tha converts to a dr table when needed with a couple of stacking chairs stored in a closet for the extra bodies when needed .

I will give this a shot! I am not a Pro, so take as a guess. Put the recliners where the cat trees are, place the love seat facing the stove. Add a drop leaf table to the back of the love seat. Add two chairs. When needed larger, bring out folding chairs to add to the table.

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas.

Kate - a dining / library area would be beautiful if we start having company more often.

AuntThelma - I like the idea of small scale wood stove seating. We're looking for a little dining table. I'm not sure if it would fit best by the island or window.

Palimpsest - I have been looking at drop leaf tables too. Good luck with the 18 - should be fun regardless!

Patricia Conwell Consulting - I looked at examples of floor plans and am not sure where to put all the measurements without making it look too busy / confusing, but I'll keep trying. I think long term we will take your advice to put a smaller couch in the den so perhaps the massage chair can fit there.

NJMomma - drop leaf behind a little wood stove love seat sounds cozy

I'll post pics once we get some new seating / table and rearrange :)

So, just with rearranging the furniture I feel it is much more cozy. The only thing I have bought so far is the little square dining table. This is working for now but I think a round drop leaf will work better so I've been on the lookout.

I actually found this thread while searching for a similar layout. We ended up keeping a small round table by the window, and it made the room feel much less cramped. We also added an osim massage chair in another corner of the great room instead of another accent chair, and it surprisingly fit the space really well without making it feel crowded. Hope you found a layout that worked!
