Is this mormal for a Monarch chrysalis?

In early August, I noticed a monarch caterpillar looking like it was getting ready to make a chrysalis. The next day it was the usual green. A few days after this, it turned black, but info indicated this was normal and it would gradually become transparent in a week to 10 days

and the orange of the butterfly could be seen. However, it's been solid black for weeks now. I fear something went wrong. Any opinions?

A healthy chrysalis remains greenish, translucent until the butterfly is very close to emerging. If yours turned black so early and has remained so is an indication that the monarch died early on in its development. You should be able to find lots of pictures of monarch chrysalis stages online.
