Would suggest you check with your local building department. While it doesn't seem to be a requirement in the International Residential Building Code some local local jurisdictions may require it.

If you don't have to have a vent by code, the cabinet needs to be higher over the range than the ones next to it (check the appliance specifications). Practically speaking, you also need some headroom to work. But keep in mind, a range hood doesn't have to take up the entire column. Look at shallow ones. You don't see them as frequently in model kitchens, but they are probably used more often than designer pictures suggest.
